Bengaluru Tiranga Rally Delayed After Police Object to Protest Placards

Dateline: Bengaluru, Karnataka

A Tiranga rally in Bengaluru opposing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls was delayed by nearly 30 minutes on Friday after police objected to protest placards being carried during the procession.

The rally was organised by Left groups, civil-society organisations, farmer unions, Dalit organisations and other participants. Demonstrators called for the withdrawal of the electoral-roll revision exercise and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to reporting by The Indian Express, police said permission for the march was conditional and covered the carrying of the national flag and constitutional placards. A separate permission allowed a demonstration at Freedom Park.

Police referred to a Karnataka High Court order designating Freedom Park as a venue for demonstrations intended to minimise traffic disruption. They insisted that protest-related placards could not be displayed during the march itself.

Organisers removed the placards after discussions with police, allowing the procession to continue under supervision. Participants subsequently gathered at Freedom Park to hold their demonstration.

The incident highlights the practical challenges of managing public demonstrations in busy urban areas. Authorities have responsibilities to maintain public order and manage traffic, while participants have an interest in expressing political views and communicating their demands.

The central question is how protest conditions are applied in practice. Restrictions on the location, route or format of a demonstration should be understood in the context of the relevant permissions and legal orders rather than assumed to constitute a blanket ban on protest.

The dispute also comes amid similar demonstrations and restrictions concerning slogans, posters and banners at earlier rallies.

Why it matters: The episode raises broader questions about freedom of expression, protest permissions and the balance between public order and peaceful political participation.
