Breaking News: India Raises Energy Security Concerns Amid US–Iran Conflict in Rajya Sabha

Live scenes from the Rajya Sabha showed disruptions while India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar presented the Government of India’s official statement regarding the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Members raised slogans and the Chair repeatedly urged them to return to their seats so that the House could function smoothly. Amid the commotion, a member requested permission under Rule 176 to hold a short-duration discussion on the emerging challenges to India’s energy security. The member stressed that the rapidly changing geopolitical situation in West Asia is no longer confined to the region and is beginning to impact India directly. It was highlighted that India meets nearly 55 percent of its crude oil requirements through imports from West Asia. Any escalation of the conflict could therefore affect India’s economic stability. The member also pointed out that nearly 10 million Indians work in West Asian countries, and their safety and livelihoods depend on regional stability. Additionally, India receives about 51 billion US dollars in remittances annually from Gulf countries. Rising tensions have already started affecting domestic prices, including an increase in cooking gas cylinder costs.
