In a significant diplomatic development, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh during the ongoing Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi. The meeting comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are escalating due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Although the official agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed by the Ministry of External Affairs (India), it is believed that the current security situation in West Asia was discussed. India has consistently emphasized the need for peace, diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the crisis. Earlier, Jaishankar had also spoken with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding the situation. In addition, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently visited the Iranian embassy to offer condolences following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. India has been actively engaging with multiple regional leaders as well, including officials from United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan, stressing the importance of diplomacy to prevent further escalation in the region. Experts believe the meeting signals India’s attempt to encourage dialogue and de-escalation amid the growing conflict in the Middle East.
