From Diana to Catherine: Two Generations of Royal Curtsies to Oman’s Sultans

A striking royal moment has drawn attention to a historical connection between two generations of the British royal family. Catherine, Princess of Wales, performed a deep curtsy while greeting Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman during his state visit to the United Kingdom in October 2026, echoing a similar moment involving Diana, Princess of Wales, nearly four decades earlier.

The recent greeting took place on 20 October during the ceremonial welcome for the Omani ruler in Windsor. King Charles III and Queen Camilla, accompanied by Prince William and Catherine, welcomed the Sultan as part of his official state visit.

A Moment That Connects Two Eras

Photographs from the ceremony show Catherine lowering into a formal curtsy as she greeted Sultan Haitham. Her deep green outfit and composed appearance added to the ceremonial atmosphere of the occasion.

The scene recalled an archival photograph of Diana, Princess of Wales, greeting the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said in Muscat, Oman, on 11 November 1986. The photograph captured Diana performing a low curtsy during the royal visit.

Although the two encounters occurred in different countries and under different circumstances, the similar gestures offer a visual link between two generations of royal diplomacy.

The Royal Tradition of the Curtsy

A curtsy is a traditional gesture of respect used in formal royal settings. Such gestures remain part of ceremonial greetings involving members of royal families and visiting dignitaries.

In Catherine’s case, the curtsy formed part of the formal reception for a visiting head of state. Diana’s gesture in 1986 similarly reflected the ceremonial customs surrounding royal visits and diplomatic engagements.

A Historic Visit by Oman’s Sultan

Sultan Haitham’s October 2026 visit was the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a Sultan of Oman in 44 years. The previous state visit by an Omani Sultan took place in March 1982, when Queen Elizabeth II hosted Sultan Qaboos at Buckingham Palace.

The visit included a ceremonial welcome, a carriage procession through Windsor and a state banquet at Windsor Castle, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Royal History Through a Single Gesture

From Diana’s encounter with Sultan Qaboos in 1986 to Catherine’s greeting of Sultan Haitham in 2026, the two photographs capture similar moments separated by 40 years.

Beyond the visual resemblance, the scenes illustrate how formal traditions continue to feature in royal engagements and diplomatic relations between Britain and Oman.
