Delhi LG Proposes TB Screening For All Hospital Admissions

Delhi Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu wants every hospital patient screened for TB at admission as the city trails key targets ahead of a Sept 30 deadline.

Every patient admitted to a Delhi hospital may soon be checked for tuberculosis, whatever illness brought them in, under a plan floated by Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu. He wants staff to test people for TB at the point of admission, with the agreement of the patient or their family.

The idea surfaced during Sandhu's review of the city's TB programme, his second such assessment after an earlier one on June 23. Delhi is trailing on several goals set under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, and the deadline for meeting them falls on September 30.

Two figures underline how far the city has to go. TB Preventive Treatment now reaches 55 per cent of eligible household contacts, short of the 80 per cent goal. Differentiated TB Care sits at 74 per cent, below the 90 per cent mark set for it.

Sandhu told officials to hit both targets before the deadline and to fix the operational problems slowing them down. He asked that TB screening be pushed harder in high-risk hospital wards and in crowded, shared living settings.

Radiographer Shortage Grounds X-ray Machines

A lack of radiographers is keeping AI-enabled handheld X-ray machines from being used to their full extent for TB detection. The Lieutenant Governor instructed officials to fill the staffing gap quickly so the equipment already on hand can be put to work.

He also called for a stronger public campaign, using social media and other channels, to chip away at the stigma attached to TB and to encourage more people to come forward for testing.

Pending Cash Transfers To Be Cleared

Sandhu directed that outstanding Direct Benefit Transfer payments owed to eligible beneficiaries be released without further delay. With the September 30 cut-off drawing near, officials were told to widen screening and narrow the shortfall in both preventive treatment and differentiated care.
