Hundreds Camp in Madrid Tents to Protest Housing Crisis

Hundreds of protesters have pitched tents in central Madrid to demand action on housing costs and evictions, with demonstrations spreading to Barcelona.

Hundreds of protesters have pitched tent encampments in central Madrid to demand that the government act on soaring housing costs and rising evictions. The demonstrations have since spread to Barcelona, widening the reach of the campaign.

The protesters used the camps to press two linked demands: relief from housing costs that they say have climbed out of reach, and stronger protection for people facing eviction. By occupying central public space with tents, they turned the shortage of affordable homes into a visible, physical presence in the heart of the capital.

Spain is confronting a severe shortfall in housing supply. The country currently faces a deficit of 750,000 homes, a gap between the number of homes available and the number people need.

The central bank has warned that the situation is set to deteriorate. It cautioned that the shortage could exceed one million homes by 2028 if current trends continue, pointing to a widening gap in the years ahead rather than a problem that is easing.

The move of the protests from Madrid to Barcelona signals that frustration over housing is not confined to a single city. The encampments have brought demonstrators into direct, sustained contact with the streets of two of Spain's largest urban centres, keeping the demands for government action in public view.
