INDIA alliance holds a symbolic public hearing against CEC Gyanesh Kumar as opposition leaders raise concerns over alleged vote theft and voter-list deletions.

New Delhi | October 31, 2026

The INDIA opposition alliance has organised a symbolic public hearing, titled ‘Janata Ki Adalat’ (People’s Court), against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, intensifying its campaign over alleged electoral irregularities and claims of vote theft.

The event was held at the residence of Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, in New Delhi. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over the proceedings, while Kharge presented the proposal against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Opposition leaders, Members of Parliament, civil society representatives, student organisations and individuals claiming to have been affected by voter-list deletions participated in the gathering.

Opposition Raises Questions Over Voter Lists

During the public hearing, opposition representatives raised concerns about alleged irregularities in electoral processes and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The INDIA alliance alleged that eligible voters had been removed from electoral lists without proper justification, potentially affecting their constitutional right to vote.

People who claimed that their names had been deleted from voter lists were also given an opportunity to share their experiences.

The opposition said the initiative was intended to provide a public platform for individuals who believed their voting rights and identities had been affected by the electoral revision process.

Mallikarjun Kharge Presents Proposal Against CEC

Mallikarjun Kharge presented the proposal outlining the opposition's allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The opposition has questioned the Election Commission's handling of electoral rolls, transparency in the revision process and its institutional independence.

Congress leaders have also demanded accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that the functioning of the electoral institution has raised concerns about the fairness of democratic processes.

These allegations have been made by opposition leaders and have not been established as judicial findings.

Meira Kumar Presides Over the Proceedings

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar chaired the symbolic public hearing.

The event brought together political representatives and citizens who wanted to raise concerns about electoral transparency and voter rights.

Participants discussed the importance of protecting eligible voters' names on electoral rolls and ensuring that citizens are able to exercise their democratic rights.

The opposition described the gathering as an effort to take the debate beyond Parliament and directly engage with the public.

What Does the ‘People’s Court’ Mean?

The event was organised as a symbolic public impeachment-style hearing against the Chief Election Commissioner.

It is important to clarify that this was not a formal constitutional impeachment or an official parliamentary proceeding. The public hearing itself cannot remove the Chief Election Commissioner from office.

The constitutional process for removing a Chief Election Commissioner is governed by specific legal provisions and parliamentary procedures.

The event was primarily a political protest intended to highlight the opposition's allegations and demands for accountability.

Opposition Plans Further Protest at Ramlila Maidan

The INDIA alliance is also preparing a larger public rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on November 1, 2026.

The proposed demonstration is expected to focus on alleged vote theft, voter-list revision concerns and demands for greater transparency in the electoral system.

Opposition leaders have called on political workers, students, civil society organisations and citizens to participate in the campaign.

The rally is expected to extend the alliance's efforts to make electoral transparency and voter rights major national political issues.

Political Debate Over Electoral Transparency Continues

The public hearing against Gyanesh Kumar marks another development in the ongoing confrontation between opposition parties and the Election Commission.

While opposition leaders are demanding accountability and questioning the electoral process, the allegations remain politically contested.

The developments have once again brought attention to the importance of transparent voter registration, accurate electoral rolls and public confidence in democratic institutions.

The coming days may see further political discussions and demonstrations as the INDIA alliance continues its campaign over alleged vote theft.
