Indian Navy warship INS Sahyadri has arrived in Vladivostok, Russia, ahead of the bilateral naval exercise INDRA 2026, scheduled to take place from October 13 to 18. The deployment is intended to strengthen maritime cooperation, improve coordination between the two navies and provide opportunities for professional interaction.

According to the Indian government’s Press Information Bureau, the ship arrived on October 10. The exercise will involve activities during a harbour phase, followed by coordinated operations at sea. Naval personnel will also take part in professional, social and cultural engagements.

Why the exercise matters

India and Russia have maintained a long-standing defence relationship. Joint military exercises allow participating forces to practise procedures, exchange professional experience and improve their ability to coordinate during maritime operations.

The Indian Ministry of Defence said the deployment supports India’s MAHASAGAR vision and builds on the countries’ wider defence and maritime partnership. The exercise is also an opportunity for personnel from both navies to develop familiarity with one another’s operating practices.

Naval exercises can cover a range of activities, including communications, manoeuvring and coordinated operations. However, the precise operational activities planned for INDRA 2026 should be confirmed from official exercise updates rather than assumed in advance.

The exercise is scheduled to run for six days, from October 13 through October 18. Further details about participating vessels, the operational phase and outcomes may be released by the Indian Navy or the Ministry of Defence as the programme progresses.

The arrival of INS Sahyadri highlights continued military-to-military engagement between New Delhi and Moscow. The practical significance of the exercise will become clearer once the participating forces complete their planned activities.
