Netanyahu's Bloc Short of Majority as Israel Election Results Continue

Israel's political future remained uncertain on October 29, 2026, as preliminary election results showed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political bloc short of the parliamentary majority required to form a government on its own.

With vote counting continuing, results published by an election-tracking website showed Netanyahu's bloc holding 54 seats, seven short of the 61 seats required for a majority in Israel's 120-member Knesset. The figures reflected approximately 96.1% of valid votes counted at the time of the update and remained subject to change.

The outcome leaves coalition negotiations central to the next stage of the political process. In Israel's parliamentary system, a party or bloc generally needs the support of at least 61 lawmakers to command a majority.

What do the preliminary results show?

The preliminary figures indicated that Likud, Netanyahu's party, remained the largest party in the count. Opposition parties and Arab-led lists also secured significant representation, but no single rival grouping appeared to have an outright majority.

The distribution of seats matters because the formation of an Israeli government often depends on negotiations among parties with different policy priorities. Even when a party finishes first, it must still assemble sufficient parliamentary support to govern.

The reported seat totals are not a final declaration of the election result. Vote counting, official verification and the formal certification process remain important before the political landscape can be considered settled.

Why is the majority threshold important?

The Knesset has 120 seats, making 61 the standard threshold for a parliamentary majority. If Netanyahu's bloc remains below that number, it would need additional support from parties or lawmakers outside the bloc to form a majority government.

Coalition negotiations can involve agreements over government portfolios, policy commitments and legislative priorities. The results may also influence the opposition's strategy, including whether different parties attempt to coordinate their parliamentary positions.

A bloc that falls short of a majority does not automatically lose the opportunity to form a government. The ability to secure support from other parties is often decisive.

What happens next?

Israel's formal government-formation process follows the official election results. President Isaac Herzog consults political parties before assigning a lawmaker the task of attempting to form a government. Under the country's procedure, the designated candidate is generally given 28 days, with a possible 14-day extension.

The final allocation of seats and subsequent negotiations will determine whether Netanyahu can assemble a governing coalition or whether another candidate has a viable path to power.

Until official results are confirmed, preliminary projections should be treated cautiously. Small changes in the remaining vote count could alter seat allocations, while political negotiations could reshape the possible governing arrangements.

A closely watched political transition

The election is significant because the result will determine the balance of power in Israel's parliament and the direction of its next government. Parties will face pressure to translate electoral support into a workable coalition while negotiating over domestic and national policy priorities.

For now, the key question is not simply which party has the largest vote share, but which political grouping can demonstrate sufficient support in the Knesset.
