Karina reached hurricane strength Sunday with 80 mph winds, staying far out at sea but sending dangerous swells toward southwest Mexico.

Karina grew from a tropical storm into a hurricane over the Pacific Ocean on Sunday, and forecasters said it could reach major-storm strength later in the week. The system's center sat far offshore and posed no danger to any coastline.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami measured Karina's top sustained winds at 80 miles per hour (130 kilometers per hour), placing it at Category 1 on the intensity scale. A storm must reach Category 3 to be classed as a major hurricane.

At the time of the update, Karina was roughly 820 miles (1,325 kilometers) southwest of the lower end of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. It was tracking to the northwest at 15 miles per hour (24 kilometers per hour), on a course that would carry it deeper into open water.

Even with the storm holding its distance from shore, forecasters warned that its swells were expected to whip up hazardous surf and rip currents along stretches of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.

A second system, Tropical Storm Lowell, was churning about 1,150 miles (1,850 kilometers) southeast of Hawaii. It also presented no risk to land.

Across in the Atlantic, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has projected a quieter-than-usual season, an outlook it linked to El Niño. The agency's forecast called for eight to 14 named storms, of which three to six could become hurricanes and one to three could strengthen into major hurricanes.
