Nifty Posts Its Worst September Series in 25 Years

India's Nifty index recorded its weakest September derivatives series in 25 years, while gold prices eased and Tata group stocks declined.

India's benchmark Nifty index closed out its weakest September series in 25 years, marking the worst performance for the month in a quarter of a century of trading. The stretch capped a difficult period for equity investors on the National Stock Exchange.

The slide was broad. Tata group stocks were among the decliners, adding to pressure across the market during the series. At the same time, gold - often a refuge when equities wobble - lost ground, easing back after a strong run.

The combination of a sinking headline index and softer gold left investors with few places to hide. A September series this weak has no parallel over the past 25 years, underscoring how sharply sentiment turned during the month.

Tata stocks, spread across sectors from steel and autos to technology and consumer goods, carry heavy weight in Indian portfolios. Their decline during the series contributed to the wider drop and drew attention given the group's prominence on the exchange.

Gold's retreat stood out because the metal is typically bought as a hedge when share prices fall. Its pullback during the same stretch signalled that the usual pattern of money rotating from stocks into bullion did not hold this time.

Taken together, the three moves - a record-poor Nifty series, falling Tata shares and a slipping gold price - defined the close of September for Indian markets. The month now enters the record books as the worst September series the Nifty has seen in 25 years.
