PM Modi hoists the Tricolour as India marks 80th Independence Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort on Saturday as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day.

The unfurling was followed by a 21-gun salute. Army, Navy, Air Force and Delhi Police personnel formed the guard of honour. Two Air Force helicopters then showered flower petals over the grounds.

Vande Mataram was sung at the Red Fort during the Independence Day ceremony for the first time. The tribute marks 150 years of the national song. Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan assisted with the flag hoist.

Modi then addressed the nation from the ramparts. It was his 13th straight Independence Day speech from the Fort. He called it a historic morning and said Vande Mataram was echoing from the monument after decades of Independence Day events.

Schools and government offices are closed for the holiday. Similar flag ceremonies are being held in state capitals across the country.
