Red Fort tomorrow: Vande Mataram to be sung for the first time on Independence Day

India marks its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, and the Red Fort ceremony is not a carbon copy of last year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the flag in Delhi and speak from the ramparts for the 13th year running. The bigger shift is musical, and official. For the first time, Vande Mataram is part of the August 15 programme at the Fort. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said it will be sung when the Prime Minister arrives, before the flag goes up. 2026 also marks 150 years of the national song.

The rest of the morning stays close to tradition. Flag hoisting is expected around 7:30 am. A 21-gun salute is planned with Indian-made 105mm field guns. Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan is due to assist with the unfurling. After the address, NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers will sing Vande Mataram again; officials say the crowd along Gyanpath will form the words.

Two themes sit over the day: 150 years of Vande Mataram, and Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047. About 5,000 special guests have been invited, including young science olympiad medallists. Doordarshan is scheduled to go live from 6:30 am. The speech is also meant to be translated in real time into 22 Indian languages through Bhashini.

August 15 is a holiday. Watch on DD, PIB's stream, or any major news channel. The facts above come from the government's own briefing, not from social media rumours.
