Eight people arrested after BSF personnel were attacked in Tripura's Ashabari. A service weapon was reportedly snatched and later recovered

Ashabari, Tripura | November 3, 2026

Eight people have been arrested following an attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Ashabari village of Tripura’s Sepahijala district, near the India–Bangladesh border. The incident occurred on Monday, November 2, after a confrontation linked to suspected cross-border smuggling and the detention of a local resident escalated into violence.

According to reports citing police and BSF sources, four BSF personnel, including an Assistant Commandant, sustained injuries during the confrontation. The attackers allegedly used bamboo sticks, iron rods and other objects to assault the personnel and damage a BSF vehicle. A service weapon was reportedly snatched during the incident but was subsequently recovered.

Dispute over suspected smuggling escalates

The confrontation reportedly began when BSF personnel from the 49th Battalion, deployed near the Ashabari Border Outpost, acted on information about suspected smuggling activity along the international border.

During the operation, a local resident identified as Hefzur Rahman was detained on suspicion of involvement in smuggling. Reports indicate that a dispute developed between the BSF personnel and local residents after the detention.

According to police accounts reported by India Today, a BSF jawan allegedly assaulted the detained resident with a stick. The allegation reportedly angered other villagers, who gathered and blocked the Boxanagar–Rahimpur road, disrupting traffic.

The circumstances surrounding the initial confrontation and the allegations made by both sides are part of the investigation.

BSF personnel allegedly attacked by a crowd

The situation reportedly worsened when Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar and other BSF personnel arrived at the location. A group of people allegedly attacked the security personnel with bamboo sticks, iron rods and other objects.

A video circulated on social media reportedly shows a crowd approaching the BSF team and attacking its vehicle. The vehicle's windshield was also damaged during the confrontation.

Four BSF personnel, including Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar, were reported injured. They were initially taken to the Boxanagar Primary Health Centre for medical attention.

Service weapon reportedly snatched and recovered

One of the serious aspects of the incident was the reported snatching of a BSF service weapon during the assault.

According to a report by The Times of India, the crowd managed to take a weapon from one of the personnel, but it was later recovered. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of security personnel and the protection of their weapons while operating in sensitive border areas.

The BSF subsequently lodged a complaint at Kalamchoura Police Station, leading to the registration of a case.

Eight arrests; more people named in the case

Tripura Police arrested eight people in connection with the incident, according to reports published on November 3. Police teams from Bishalgarh and Kalamchoura conducted searches to identify and detain those allegedly involved.

Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma confirmed the arrests, according to The Times of India. The report also stated that a case had been registered against 19 people.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the assault and announced that eight accused persons had been arrested. He said those responsible would face legal action and that violence against security personnel would not be tolerated.

The case reportedly includes allegations involving assault on BSF personnel, theft of a service weapon and obstruction of public officials performing their duties.

Investigation underway

The incident has brought attention to the challenges faced by security forces along the India–Bangladesh border, where personnel work to prevent smuggling and other cross-border illegal activities.

Investigators are examining the sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the detention of the local resident, the alleged assault on BSF personnel and the reported recovery of the service weapon.

The investigation will also establish the individual roles of those accused. The allegations against the arrested individuals must be determined through the legal process.
