Bay of Bengal Cyclone Alert: Andhra Pradesh Coast on High Alert as Storm May Intensify; Heavy Rain Forecast for October 27–28

Bay of Bengal Cyclone Alert: Andhra Pradesh Coast on High Alert

Amaravati/Visakhapatnam, October 25: Coastal Andhra Pradesh is on alert as a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall and strong winds to coastal districts later this week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a pre-cyclone watch for Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southern Odisha. According to its latest coastal weather bulletin, the depression over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify and move towards the west-central Bay of Bengal.

The system could approach the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28. However, its exact track, intensity and landfall location may change as the weather system develops.

Cyclone May Intensify by October 27

The IMD’s October 25 bulletin indicates that the depression is likely to strengthen into a deep depression before developing into a cyclonic storm. Further intensification into a severe cyclonic storm is possible around October 27.

If the system follows the current forecast, it could approach or cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam around October 28.

The name “Arnab” is expected to be used if the system develops into a named cyclone. Until it reaches the required intensity, it is more accurate to describe it as a developing depression rather than a confirmed cyclone.

The forecast remains subject to updates from the meteorological department.

Heavy Rain Forecast Across Coastal Andhra Pradesh

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and 28, with extremely heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations, according to reports based on IMD forecasts.

Districts that may be affected by heavy rainfall include:

  • Visakhapatnam

  • Anakapalli

  • Kakinada

  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema

  • East Godavari and West Godavari

  • Eluru

  • NTR and Krishna

  • Guntur and Bapatla

  • Srikakulam and Vizianagaram

The severity and distribution of rainfall may vary by district. Residents should check the latest district-level forecasts and warnings before making travel or outdoor plans.

Strong winds may also affect coastal areas. The IMD has warned of the possibility of gale-force winds in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh during October 27–28.

Fishermen Advised to Exercise Caution

Rough sea conditions are expected over parts of the Bay of Bengal as the system strengthens. Fishermen should follow official marine warnings and avoid venturing into the sea when advised to do so.

Fishing boats already at sea should follow instructions issued by fisheries officials and local authorities.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should monitor local announcements and be prepared to move to safer locations if evacuation instructions are issued.

Odisha Also Prepares for Heavy Rain

Southern Odisha may also experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall as the weather system approaches the eastern coast.

Reports on October 25 indicate that schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts are scheduled to remain closed on October 28 and 29 as a precaution.

Emergency response teams and local authorities are preparing for possible weather-related disruption. The impact will depend on the storm’s eventual path, intensity and rainfall distribution.

Safety Measures for Coastal Residents

Authorities and weather experts advise the public to take the following precautions:

  1. Follow official warnings: Monitor IMD bulletins and announcements from district administrations.

  2. Avoid the sea: Do not enter the sea or undertake fishing activities when restrictions are in force.

  3. Prepare emergency supplies: Keep drinking water, essential medicines, a torch, charged phones and important documents accessible.

  4. Stay away from damaged electrical lines: Report fallen power lines and avoid flooded electrical areas.

  5. Take evacuation instructions seriously: People in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas should follow directions issued by local officials.

  6. Avoid spreading rumours: Share weather updates only from reliable and official sources.

What Happens Next?

The coming days will be important in determining the system’s final strength and movement. Forecasts currently point to a possible approach towards the Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28, accompanied by a risk of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Residents should not assume that the projected landfall location or storm intensity is final. The IMD may revise its forecast as fresh satellite, radar and ocean observations become available.

News National will continue to monitor official weather updates and publish verified developments as they emerge.
