Cyberattack Hits Hundreds of French Supermarkets, Disrupts Refrigeration Systems

A cyberattack disrupted refrigeration systems at hundreds of French supermarkets, causing food losses and prompting a security investigation.

A major cyberattack has disrupted refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets in France, causing food losses and raising concerns about the security of connected equipment. French authorities are investigating the incident, which affected stores belonging to several major retail chains.

According to Associated Press reporting published on October 13–14, 2026, around 700 supermarkets were affected. The attacks reportedly interfered with refrigeration controls, causing temperatures to rise and forcing some stores to discard fresh and frozen products.

The incident highlights how cyberattacks can affect physical operations, not just computers and customer databases. When connected equipment is exposed to the internet without adequate security, attackers may be able to interfere with essential systems such as refrigeration, manufacturing controls and building management.

French authorities are investigating the attack, and the people responsible have not been publicly identified. Reports have also pointed to weaknesses involving older or inadequately secured refrigeration-control systems. Investigators will need to establish the precise method used and whether the separate incidents share a common origin.

The disruption has renewed calls for businesses to secure internet-connected equipment, install available security updates, restrict remote access and monitor systems for unusual changes. Retailers should also maintain manual operating procedures so staff can respond quickly if digital controls fail.
