A massive rock formation collapsed near Göreme in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, sending a thick cloud of dust across a nearby parking area and killing three people, including a foreign tourist. Five others were injured in the incident, which occurred on October 29.

Dramatic footage of the collapse has since emerged, showing huge chunks of rock breaking away from a towering volcanic formation and crashing toward an area where visitors were present.

What Happened in Cappadocia?

The collapse occurred near the entrance to the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a popular tourist attraction in central Turkey.

According to local authorities, the incident happened at approximately 3:15 p.m. local time. Large sections of a natural rock formation, known as a fairy chimney, suddenly broke away and fell toward the ground.

The falling rocks generated a massive dust cloud that spread across the surrounding area. The collapse was captured on a vehicle's dashboard camera, providing a dramatic view of the incident.

Three people were killed and five others sustained injuries. Emergency responders, including rescue teams and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene.

Heavy Rain Suspected as Cause

Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök said initial findings indicated that heavy rainfall had triggered a landslide, causing the rock formation to collapse.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.

Cappadocia is famous for its distinctive volcanic rock formations, which have been shaped over millions of years by wind and water erosion. Although these formations are a major attraction for visitors, natural erosion and changing weather conditions can weaken the structures.

Safety Concerns at Tourist Attractions

The collapse has raised fresh concerns about visitor safety at popular natural attractions in Cappadocia.

Geological experts have called for temporary restrictions on access to potentially dangerous areas following the heavy rainfall. Authorities have also cordoned off the immediate collapse site.

The incident highlights the importance of regular geological assessments, safety barriers and timely warnings at locations where visitors gather near unstable rock formations.

Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage destination known for its unusual landscapes, ancient cave settlements and underground cities. The region attracts millions of visitors every year.

The investigation into the collapse is expected to examine the condition of the rock formation and whether additional safety measures are needed to protect tourists and local residents.
