Deepthi Jeevanji: From Social Prejudice to International Sporting Glory

Discover how Indian para-athlete Deepthi Jeevanji overcame social prejudice to win Paralympic bronze, world championship gold and Asian Para Games titles.

Deepthi Jeevanji’s Journey Turning Adversity into Achievement

WARANGAL, TELANGANA, October 27, 2026: Indian para-athlete Deepthi Jeevanji has become an inspiration to aspiring sportspersons through her journey from a financially disadvantaged family in Telangana to the international athletics arena. Her achievements demonstrate how sporting talent, determined training and family support can help an athlete overcome social prejudice and reach the highest levels of competition.

Born on September 27, 2003, in Kalleda village in the Warangal region of Telangana, Deepthi grew up in a family that faced financial difficulties. Her parents, Jeevanji Yadagiri and Dhanalakshmi, worked to support their household while encouraging their daughter’s sporting ambitions.

Deepthi also faced hurtful comments and social stigma during her childhood because of her intellectual impairment and physical appearance. Reports about her early life describe how some villagers questioned her family’s decisions and suggested that her parents send her to an orphanage.

Instead of allowing these attitudes to determine her future, Deepthi continued pursuing athletics with support from her family and educators.

A Teacher Recognises Her Talent

A turning point came when a school physical education teacher recognised Deepthi’s potential as a runner. Her talent subsequently attracted the attention of athletics coach N. Ramesh, who helped guide her development.

With structured training and opportunities to compete, she gradually progressed from school-level and domestic competitions to international events.

Her rise illustrates the importance of identifying sporting ability early and ensuring that young athletes receive appropriate coaching, encouragement and access to competitive opportunities.

Historic Gold at the Asian Para Games

Deepthi established herself as a major name in para-athletics at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. She won gold in the women’s 400-metre T20 event, setting an Asian record and a Games record with a time of 56.69 seconds.

The T20 classification is used for athletes with intellectual impairments.

Her achievement brought national attention to her abilities and marked an important milestone in her international career.

In May 2024, she reached another historic milestone at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan. She won gold in the women’s 400m T20 event, setting a world record of approximately 55.06 seconds, with official reports also recording the performance as 55.07 seconds.

The result established her among the leading athletes in her classification.

Paris Paralympics Bronze Medal

Deepthi carried her impressive form into the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. On September 3, 2024, she won bronze in the women’s 400m T20 final, finishing in 55.82 seconds.

The medal was a landmark achievement for India, as she became the country’s first Paralympic medallist in this classification.

Her performance highlighted the growing presence of Indian para-athletes on the global stage and demonstrated the results that can follow sustained training and access to high-level competition.

In recognition of her sporting accomplishments, the Government of India selected her for the Arjuna Award for 2024.

A Family’s Sacrifices and a Dream Fulfilled

Deepthi’s journey has also drawn attention to the sacrifices made by her parents. Media reports have described the family’s financial struggles and the sale of agricultural land during difficult circumstances.

Deepthi has said that her sporting success enabled her to buy back the family’s land, turning a painful chapter in their lives into a source of pride.

The story reflects the role that family support can play in helping athletes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds continue their sporting careers.

Her achievements also challenged the prejudice that she and her family had experienced in their community.

Another Asian Para Games Gold in 2026

Deepthi added another major achievement to her career in October 2026 at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan.

She won gold in the women’s 400m T20 event in a Games-record time of 56.36 seconds. The victory made her a back-to-back Asian Para Games champion in the event, following her gold medal in 2023.

Japan’s Niina Kanno finished second in 58.92 seconds, while compatriot Akane Kato took bronze in 1 minute and 0.26 seconds.

The latest victory further strengthened Deepthi’s reputation as one of India’s leading para-athletes and demonstrated her continued competitiveness at the continental level.

Beyond Medals: A Message of Inclusion

Deepthi Jeevanji’s achievements carry significance beyond the medal tally. Her experience highlights the barriers that people with disabilities can face, particularly when social misconceptions combine with poverty and limited access to opportunities.

Her progress also underlines the importance of inclusive education, accessible sports facilities, professional coaching and financial assistance for promising athletes.

Rather than defining people by disability or background, communities can help them develop their abilities by providing encouragement and equal opportunities.

For young athletes who face discouragement, Deepthi’s career offers a powerful example of what sustained effort and support can achieve.

From Kalleda village in Telangana to the podium at the Asian Para Games, Deepthi Jeevanji has built an extraordinary sporting career through determination, training and family support.

Her world-record performance in Japan in 2024, Paralympic bronze in Paris and successive Asian Para Games gold medals have established important milestones in Indian para-athletics.

Her story is ultimately about more than sporting success. It is a reminder that prejudice should never determine a person’s potential and that talent can flourish when individuals receive the opportunities and support they deserve.
