Apple announces a major update to the iPad mini

Apple has announced a redesigned iPad mini featuring an OLED display, the A20 Pro chip and improved wireless connectivity. The company says the updated device combines a larger screen with a thinner, lighter design while retaining the compact format that distinguishes the mini range.

In its October 26, 2026 announcement, Apple said the tablet would feature an 8.5-inch OLED display, water and dust resistance, faster connectivity and updated software capabilities.

The new model starts at ₹82,900 for the Wi-Fi version in India, while the Wi-Fi plus Cellular version starts at ₹1,00,900, according to Apple’s published pricing.

OLED display and a thinner design

The new iPad mini uses an OLED display, a technology that controls lighting at the pixel level. Compared with conventional LCD screens, OLED can deliver deeper blacks and high contrast, which may improve the viewing experience when watching videos, viewing photographs or reading content.

Apple says the display measures 8.5 inches and supports peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits. The company also lists an optional nano-texture display configuration intended to reduce glare in bright environments.

The tablet measures 5.4 millimetres in thickness, according to Apple, and has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Such ratings are based on specified test conditions; they should not be interpreted as a guarantee against all liquid damage.

A20 Pro chip and AI features

The tablet is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip. Apple says the processor includes Neural Accelerators in each GPU core and a 16-core Neural Engine designed to support demanding computing and AI-related tasks.

The device runs iPadOS 27 and includes the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri capabilities described in the company's announcement.

AI features can help with tasks such as understanding on-screen information, assisting with writing and finding relevant information. Availability and performance may depend on software, language, region and the specific feature. Users should check Apple's official documentation for the functions supported in India and on the device.

Cameras and connectivity

Apple says the new model includes a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera positioned along the landscape edge, designed to support video calls. The company also advertises faster wireless and cellular connectivity and fast-charge support.

The iPad mini will be offered in midnight and starlight finishes, with storage options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C are listed as compatible accessories.

India price and availability

Apple’s India announcement lists the starting prices as follows:

  • Wi-Fi model: ₹82,900

  • Wi-Fi + Cellular model: ₹1,00,900

  • TechWoven Smart Folio: ₹8,500

Apple said pre-orders would begin on October 28, 2026, with availability beginning November 6 in participating markets, including India. Prices for accessories and optional configurations may vary, so buyers should confirm the final cost on Apple's official India store.

Who might consider the new iPad mini?

The compact size may appeal to readers, students, professionals and travellers who want a portable tablet for reading, note-taking, video calls and productivity. The OLED display and upgraded processor may also interest users who consume video content or run demanding apps.

However, the starting price places the device in a premium segment. Buyers should compare storage requirements, cellular connectivity, accessory costs and their existing devices before making a purchase.

Apple’s new OLED iPad mini brings a larger display, an upgraded processor and additional durability features to its compact tablet line. Its value for Indian consumers will depend on how much they benefit from those upgrades and whether the premium price fits their needs.
