How to Avoid Online Scammers 8 Essential Safety Tips Everyone Should Know

By News National Editorial Team

Online scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated as more people use smartphones, digital payments, social media and internet banking. Fraudsters often pretend to be bank officials, government representatives, customer-care agents, recruiters or investment experts to trick people into sharing confidential information or transferring money.

Scams can arrive through phone calls, text messages, WhatsApp, emails, social media advertisements and fake websites. Some promise attractive rewards or high investment returns, while others create fear by threatening account suspension, legal action or arrest.

Understanding common warning signs and following basic cybersecurity practices can help individuals and families reduce their risk of becoming victims.

1. Never Share Your OTP, UPI PIN or Banking Password

One of the most important rules of digital safety is to keep confidential banking information private.

Never share your one-time password (OTP), UPI PIN, ATM PIN, card CVV or internet banking password with strangers. A caller claiming to represent your bank may still be a fraudster.

Be cautious if someone says your bank account will be blocked unless you immediately provide an OTP or complete a payment. Contact your bank using its official website, app or verified customer-service number.

Remember: A genuine-looking caller ID or familiar bank logo does not prove that a communication is authentic.

2. Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links

Scammers frequently send links through SMS, WhatsApp, email and social media. These links may lead to fake websites designed to steal passwords, banking details or personal information.

Messages claiming that you have won a prize, received a parcel, qualified for a refund or must urgently update your KYC details deserve careful scrutiny.

Instead of clicking the link, open the organisation's official website by typing its address yourself. Check the domain carefully, and do not download unexpected attachments or applications.

3. Understand How UPI Payments Work

UPI makes digital payments convenient, but scammers may exploit users who are unfamiliar with the process.

A person generally does not need to enter a UPI PIN to receive money. If someone asks you to enter your PIN or approve a payment to receive a refund, prize or transfer, stop and verify the request.

Before approving a transaction, check the recipient's name and the amount displayed on your payment application. Never approve a request simply because someone claims it is necessary to unlock money.

4. Be Careful With Fake Job Offers and Investment Schemes

Fraudsters may advertise work-from-home jobs, easy daily earnings, guaranteed investment returns or opportunities to double your money quickly.

Warning signs include requests for advance registration fees, pressure to invest immediately, unrealistic profit promises and recruiters who refuse to provide verifiable company details.

Before accepting an offer, independently check the organisation, its official website and the recruiter's identity. For investments, verify the relevant regulatory status and understand the risks before transferring money.

Do not borrow money or invest your savings based solely on social media testimonials or screenshots of alleged profits.

5. Do Not Panic Over “Digital Arrest” Threats

In a digital-arrest scam, fraudsters impersonate police officers, investigators, customs officials or other government representatives. They may claim that your identity documents, bank account or phone number are linked to a crime.

They can use video calls, fake identification cards and threatening language to pressure victims into transferring money or revealing financial information.

Do not transfer money simply because someone threatens you with arrest or demands an immediate payment to settle an alleged case. End the interaction and independently contact the relevant official agency if you believe the claim needs investigation.

6. Never Install Unknown Apps at a Stranger’s Request

Fraudsters may ask victims to install an application, download an APK file or grant remote access to their phones under the pretext of providing technical support or processing a refund.

Such access may expose messages, financial information and other sensitive data.

Download applications only from trusted sources, check the permissions they request, and reject unexpected requests to share your screen or grant remote control. Genuine customer-support assistance should not require you to hand control of your device to an unknown caller.

7. Protect Your Personal Information on Social Media

Avoid publicly sharing sensitive information such as your home address, travel plans, phone number, identity documents and financial details.

Scammers may create fake profiles using stolen photographs or impersonate friends and relatives to request urgent financial assistance.

If a friend or family member messages you asking for money, verify the request through a separate communication channel, such as a phone call to their known number.

Review your account privacy settings, use strong and unique passwords, and enable two-factor authentication wherever available.

8. Monitor Your Bank Transactions Regularly

Check your bank statements and payment history frequently. Enable transaction alerts and report unfamiliar payments immediately.

If you suspect fraud, contact your bank through its official channels to report the transaction and ask what steps are available to secure your account.

Never share an OTP or PIN with someone who claims they need it to reverse a fraudulent payment. Preserve transaction references, messages, phone numbers, screenshots and other evidence that may help investigators.

What Should You Do If You Have Been Scammed?

Act quickly if you have lost money or disclosed confidential information.

  • Call India’s cybercrime helpline at 1930 as soon as possible to report financial cyber fraud.

  • File a complaint through the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

  • Inform your bank or payment service provider immediately and request assistance with the disputed transaction.

  • Save transaction IDs, payment receipts, messages, screenshots, phone numbers and other relevant evidence.

  • Change compromised passwords using a trusted device, secure affected accounts and revoke suspicious app permissions where necessary.

Prompt reporting may improve the chances of intervention, but recovery of money is not guaranteed. Do not pay anyone who promises to recover your funds for an upfront fee without independently verifying their legitimacy.

A Simple Rule to Remember: Stop, Check and Verify

Most scams rely on one or more of three tactics: urgency, fear or the promise of easy money.

Whenever someone pressures you to act immediately, asks for confidential information, demands an unusual payment or offers an unbelievable reward, take a moment to verify the claim independently.

Share these precautions with family members, especially older adults and people who may be less familiar with digital payments.

Online safety begins with informed decisions. Protecting your PINs and passwords, avoiding suspicious links, verifying payment requests and reporting fraud promptly can help reduce the risk of financial loss.

Technology makes everyday life easier, but every user must remain alert. When in doubt, do not rush, do not share confidential information and do not send money until you have independently verified the request.
