Typhoon Champi Disrupts Taiwan Travel; Nearly 1,000 Flights Cancelled

Dateline: Taipei, Taiwan

Typhoon Champi disrupted air and sea travel in Taiwan on Friday, October 23, with authorities reporting 977 cancelled flights and the suspension of 96 ferry sailings across 10 routes.

Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration said the flight cancellations included 262 domestic services and 715 international and cross-strait flights. Taoyuan International Airport also reported hundreds of cancellations, affecting both passenger and cargo operations.

Airlines adjusted their schedules as the typhoon approached. Some long-haul flights between Taiwan and Europe or the United States were cancelled, while other services were modified according to operational and safety assessments.

Maritime services were also affected. Authorities suspended sailings on several ferry routes, including services connecting Taiwan's outlying islands with the main island and nearby destinations.

The disruptions highlight how tropical weather systems can affect transport, tourism, freight movement and essential connections to island communities. Flight cancellations may also affect travellers making international connections, while ferry suspensions can delay residents, visitors and deliveries.

Passengers travelling through Taiwan were advised to check directly with their airlines and airports before leaving for the terminal. Travellers should also monitor ferry operators and local emergency announcements for changes to service.

Typhoon tracks and intensity can change, so residents should follow official weather bulletins and local safety instructions. People in exposed coastal areas should take warnings about strong winds, rough seas and heavy rainfall seriously.

The reported cancellation totals represent the situation at the time of the published update. They should not be treated as the final number for the entire storm period.
