Hyundai Confirms Bayon Name for New India SUV, Launch Next Month

Hyundai Motor India has confirmed its new mid-size SUV will be called Bayon, with launch expected next month. Petrol and CNG options are anticipated.

Hyundai Motor India has officially named its upcoming SUV the Bayon, confirming the badge that recent camouflaged test vehicles spotted on Indian roads had pointed to. The company said fuller details about the model will be shared over the coming weeks, and the launch is expected next month.

Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg framed the Bayon as more than an addition to the line-up. "With Hyundai BAYON, we are introducing more than a new SUV. BAYON represents a new mindset," Garg said, describing the model as a fresh approach to intelligent and intuitive mobility. He added that further information would follow in the coming weeks.

The name reveal also explained a puzzling set of spy shots from earlier this month. A Bayon test mule had been seen wearing unusual white camouflage printed with the message "BRING IT ON," alongside words including Innovation, Transformation, Conversation, Reflection, Expression and Evolution. In each of those words, the letters "ON" were picked out in red. The recurring "ON" motif tied directly to the Bayon nameplate, which itself ends in those letters, and Hyundai's official campaign closed with the tagline "Intelligence ON."

Hyundai says the Bayon name is drawn from Bayonne, a city in the French Basque Country, and is meant to reflect that city's distinctive character and dynamic spirit. The badge is already established in Hyundai's international markets, but the company says the India-specific model has been developed around the requirements of Indian buyers rather than simply carried over.

What the spy shots show

While Hyundai has so far released only the name, earlier prototype sightings have already given a clear sense of the vehicle. The India-spec Bayon carries an upright stance with a relatively flat roof, prominent roof rails, squared-off wheel arches and conventional door handles. Its proportions look more SUV-like than the European Bayon currently on sale, which sits lower and more compact.

At the front, a wide lighting signature runs near the bonnet line, while the main lighting units are positioned lower on the fascia. The rear of the test cars showed a horizontal lighting element, an upright rear windscreen and a roof-mounted spoiler.

The interior has also been caught on camera. The Bayon is expected to use two integrated digital screens, one for the instrument cluster and one for infotainment, along with a newer Hyundai steering wheel carrying the brand's four-dot signature. Depending on the variant, buyers can expect features such as a 360-degree camera, a sunroof, connected-car technology and ADAS driver-assistance systems.

Petrol and CNG under the bonnet

Hyundai has not yet published specifications or powertrain details. The company is expected to lean on petrol engines for the Bayon, with its 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit among the likely options. A factory-fitted CNG version is also anticipated as part of the range. Final decisions on engines, gearboxes and variant combinations should become clearer as the launch approaches.

The Bayon is set to slot into Hyundai's SUV range between the sub-four-metre Venue and the larger Creta. That positioning gives the company a product for buyers who want something roomier than a compact SUV but are not ready to step up to the Creta, filling a gap in the middle of its portfolio.

With the name now confirmed and a launch expected next month, Hyundai has signalled it will release specifications, pricing and variant information in stages over the weeks ahead.
