Indian carpenter Devendra Suthar was recognised by Guinness World Records in 2014 for having 28 fingers and toes due to polydactyly.

Born with 28 digits, Indian carpenter Devendra Suthar has gained international recognition for a rare physical condition while continuing to work with his hands.

An Indian carpenter has attracted worldwide attention for an unusual distinction: he was born with 28 fingers and toes. His name is Devendra Suthar, and Guinness World Records recognised him for having the most fingers and toes on a living person in its record category.

Suthar, from Gujarat, India, has seven digits on each hand and seven on each foot, giving him a total of 14 fingers and 14 toes. His record was verified in Himatnagar, Gujarat, on November 11, 2014.

His story has drawn interest not only because of the record but also because he works as a carpenter, a profession that requires precision, coordination and careful handling of tools.

What is polydactyly?

Suthar was born with a condition called polydactyly, in which a person has additional fingers or toes. It is a congenital condition, meaning it is present at birth.

Polydactyly can affect one or more hands or feet, and the additional digits vary in size, structure and function. Some are fully developed, while others may be smaller or joined to neighbouring digits.

The condition can occur on its own or alongside other genetic or developmental conditions. Its effects depend on the individual’s anatomy and whether the extra digits interfere with everyday activities.

A carpenter who works with his hands

Despite his unusual anatomy, Suthar has continued working as a carpenter. In a profile published by Guinness World Records, he explained that his additional fingers do not prevent him from carrying out his work, although he must take particular care when cutting materials.

Carpentry commonly involves saws, hammers and other tools that can cause serious injuries if handled carelessly. For someone working with additional digits, awareness of hand placement and safe tool use is especially important.

Reports about Suthar have also noted that he wears specially made shoes to accommodate the seven toes on each foot.

His experience illustrates how people adapt their daily routines and equipment to meet their individual needs.

An officially recognised world record

Guinness World Records documented Suthar’s achievement in 2014. The record category identifies him as having 28 fingers and toes in total, including 14 fingers and 14 toes.

Guinness later featured him in a record-holder profile published in December 2015, bringing his story to a wider international audience.

Because world records can change, the Guinness World Records website remains the appropriate place to check the current status of the title before describing him as the present-day record holder.

Beyond the unusual number

Polydactyly is a recognised congenital condition, not a measure of a person’s abilities or potential. Its impact differs from one individual to another, and many people with additional digits can carry out everyday activities without major limitations.

Suthar’s story has attracted attention because of the combination of a rare physical characteristic, an officially documented record and his work as a carpenter.

It also serves as a reminder that unusual physical differences do not automatically prevent people from pursuing skilled professions. Individual experiences depend on their circumstances, capabilities and the adaptations available to them.
