India's August brought the nation its most intense heat in 125 years. As temperatures soar and monsoon patterns shift, scientists point to El Niño-a powerful Pacific phenomenon-as a primary driver. The crisis promises to intensify into September.

Hottest August in 125 years

August 2024 shatters a 125-year record, bringing India its warmest month since 1901. The national monthly average temperature reached 28.01°C, significantly exceeding the normal 27.34°C baseline. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, this unprecedented heat marks an alarming milestone in the nation's climate history.

September rains predicted below normal

The forecast for September brings scant comfort. IMD predicts rainfall will fall approximately 9% short of the long-period average, a significant shortfall. For the 1971-2000 baseline, September typically receives 167.9 millimeters of rain. This projected deficit could intensify acute water stress across agricultural and urban regions nationwide.

El Niño strengthens across Pacific

The root cause: El Niño is intensifying markedly, according to IMD Director General Mritunjay Mohapatra. Warm ocean currents in the central and eastern Pacific are running significantly hotter than normal for this season. Meteorologists expect this powerful climate pattern to intensify over the coming months, compounding heat and erratic rainfall across the continent.

August rainfall hits 23-year low

August brought India's driest conditions in two decades. The country received just 213.3 millimeters of rain-the lowest total since 2001. This severe deficit compounds the record heat crisis, leaving agriculture, water supplies, and ecosystems vulnerable. The combination of drought and extreme temperatures creates compounding stress across the nation.

Rain bypassed most of India

The uneven distribution of August rain severely worsened the overall crisis. Four distinct low-pressure systems formed over the Bay of Bengal during August 1-26, channeling rainfall almost exclusively to the Gangetic plain region. Meanwhile, the rest of India was left largely dry and exposed to relentless extreme heat.

Nights also grew unseasonably hot

Temperature extremes extended beyond daytime heat. August nights averaged 24.36°C, surpassing the normal 23.68°C-a critical shift in India's climate pattern. This persistent warm-night phenomenon compounds heat stress on human bodies and ecosystems. The combination of scorching days and warm nights amplifies health risks and strains cooling systems.

El Niño: A vast warm current

Normally, Pacific trade winds push warm water westward toward Indonesia and Australia, maintaining a climate equilibrium. But El Niño disrupts this fundamental pattern catastrophically. Weakened trade winds allow that warm water to reverse course dramatically, flowing eastward toward South America's coasts. This reversal warms the central Pacific across thousands of kilometers.

South American fishermen named the phenomenon

Centuries ago, fishermen operating off South America's Pacific coast noticed an unusual warm current reliably arriving around year-end. They named it "El Niño"-Spanish for "the little boy"-a reference to the Christ Child. That vernacular name persists today in global climate science, bridging ancient maritime observation with modern meteorology.
