Israel Election Results Leave Netanyahu's Bloc Short of Majority

Israel's final election results have left Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political bloc short of the parliamentary majority required to govern independently.

The Central Elections Committee published the final party breakdown on October 30, confirming that the results had not changed from the previous allocation.

The pro-Netanyahu bloc secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while the anti-Netanyahu bloc obtained 48 seats. Arab political factions secured a combined 19 seats.

The results mean that Netanyahu's bloc remains eight seats short of the 61 needed for a parliamentary majority.

Final party allocation

The published results showed Likud winning 27 seats, followed by Yashar with 21, B'Yachad with 12 and the Joint List with 11.

Other parties included The Democrats with eight seats, Ra'am with eight, Yisrael Beytenu with seven, United Torah Judaism with seven, Otzma Yehudit with seven, Shas with six and Religious Zionism with six.

The final voter turnout was reported at 77.9%, with more than 5.7 million votes cast.

What happens when no bloc has a majority?

Israel follows a parliamentary system in which the government must be able to command support in the Knesset.

A bloc that wins the largest number of seats does not automatically obtain the right to govern without additional parliamentary support.

Political parties may negotiate coalition agreements, policy commitments and government positions to build a working majority.

The final results therefore begin another important phase of political negotiations.

When will the new Knesset meet?

According to the published election update, the official results are due to be submitted to President Isaac Herzog on November 4 after any examination of errors or inquiries.

The new Knesset is scheduled to be sworn in on November 10.

The coming days will be important for determining which political grouping can secure enough support to form the next government.

The election outcome could influence Israel's domestic policy, security priorities and relations with international partners.
