Fresh violence in Manipur has left nine people dead, prompting additional security deployment and appeals for peace from the state government.

Manipur, October 11, 2026

Fresh violence in Manipur's hill districts has left at least nine people dead and several houses damaged or burned, according to reports published on Sunday. The incidents were reported across Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts, prompting renewed security measures and appeals for calm.

The latest violence reportedly began after a woman was shot dead in Chassad village in Kamjong district on Friday night. Subsequent clashes involving armed groups were reported, with further casualties and damage to homes and shops. Authorities have imposed prohibitory orders in affected areas to prevent further escalation.

Reports indicate that the victims came from different communities, including Naga and Kuki groups. The circumstances surrounding individual deaths and the responsibility for specific attacks remain matters for investigation. It is important not to attribute collective responsibility to an entire community for acts allegedly committed by individuals or armed groups.

Chief Minister appeals for peace

Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh condemned the killings and called on communities to exercise restraint. He said authorities had been instructed to take effective steps to restore peace, maintain order and protect residents.

Additional security forces were reportedly deployed to the worst-affected districts. The state administration faces the immediate challenge of preventing retaliatory violence, protecting vulnerable villages and ensuring safe movement on roads affected by the unrest.

The Chief Minister also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. According to reports, the Prime Minister assured support for efforts to restore peace in the state.

Security and humanitarian concerns

The latest incidents underscore the continuing security challenges in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and armed confrontations have affected communities over an extended period. Fresh attacks can displace residents, interrupt transport and make access to medical care and essential supplies more difficult.

Authorities will need to establish the sequence of events, investigate the killings and damage, and communicate verified information to residents. Community leaders and local organisations can also play an important role in preventing rumours and retaliatory attacks.

Residents should follow official safety instructions and avoid sharing unverified videos or claims about the identities of attackers. Old footage and material from unrelated locations can create confusion during periods of unrest.

The situation remains serious, and casualty figures or security restrictions may change as officials provide further information.
