Deadly flash floods hit Mexico after Tropical Storm Vance remnants bring torrential rain. Two die in Sonora as cars are swept into the sea.

By News National Editorial Team

Severe flash flooding swept across northwestern Mexico after torrential rainfall associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Vance triggered dangerous water flows in Baja California Sur and Sonora on October 30 and 31, 2026.

The extreme weather caused vehicles to be swept towards the ocean, flooded residential areas and forced emergency teams to carry out multiple rescue operations.

Two people died in the state of Sonora after the vehicle they were travelling in was carried away by powerful floodwaters. Meanwhile, in San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur, several vehicles were swept towards Costa Azul beach, with some ending up in the sea.

The flooding also forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from a medical facility as water entered the premises.

The disaster highlighted the dangers of sudden flooding in areas where intense rainfall can quickly turn normally manageable streams and drainage channels into powerful torrents.

Vehicles swept into the ocean at Costa Azul

One of the most dramatic scenes unfolded in Costa Azul, near San José del Cabo, a popular coastal destination in Baja California Sur.

Heavy rainfall caused streams and natural drainage channels to overflow, sending muddy water rushing through streets and towards the coastline.

The powerful currents swept parked vehicles towards the beach. Some cars were left stranded on the sand, while others were reportedly carried into the sea.

Images circulating from the affected area showed the destructive force of the water as vehicles were displaced from roads and parking areas.

According to Mexico's National Civil Protection Coordination, 18 vehicles were affected by the floodwaters in the Los Cabos area.

Authorities in Baja California Sur initially reported material damage without confirming any deaths in San José del Cabo.

Two people killed in Sonora

The most serious loss of life was reported in Guaymas, in the neighbouring state of Sonora.

Two men died after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by a strong current and became trapped beneath a bridge near Boulevard Tetabiate.

Emergency personnel, including aquatic rescue teams and other responders, attended the scene to recover the victims.

The incident demonstrated how quickly vehicles can become trapped when drivers attempt to cross flooded roads or areas affected by rapidly rising water.

According to reports, the rainfall caused flooding in several neighbourhoods of Guaymas and affected nearby areas, including Empalme.

The deaths were confirmed in reports published by Mexican media on October 31.

Hundreds evacuated from a medical clinic

The flooding also affected the Mexican Social Security Institute's Family Medicine Clinic No. 6 in San José del Cabo.

Water entered the medical facility after heavy rainfall overwhelmed protective barriers and surrounding drainage systems.

Authorities ordered an evacuation to protect patients, healthcare workers and other people inside the building.

Initial local reporting said approximately 350 people were evacuated from the clinic. Subsequent reports gave a figure of 356 people, including patients and staff.

Emergency teams also transported additional people to another medical facility.

The flooding disrupted normal medical operations and required coordinated assistance from emergency services and government agencies.

Emergency teams carry out dozens of rescues

Emergency services were deployed across affected communities to assist people trapped by rising water.

According to the initial reports from Los Cabos, firefighters carried out 12 rescues in locations including:

  • Costa Azul.

  • Ricardo Flores Magón.

  • Santa Rosa.

  • El Tildillo.

Later national-level reporting from Mexico's Civil Protection Coordination put the total at 41 people rescued across affected high-risk areas.

The difference reflects separate reporting updates and geographical coverage rather than necessarily conflicting rescue accounts.

The operation involved firefighters, civil protection personnel, naval forces and other emergency responders.

Torrential rainfall overwhelmed local drainage systems

The intensity of the rainfall was one of the major factors behind the flooding.

Reports from Guaymas indicated that approximately 120 millimetres of rain fell within just 45 minutes in an affected area.

Such concentrated rainfall can overwhelm drainage infrastructure and cause water to accumulate rapidly.

Natural streams and dry riverbeds can also become dangerous during sudden storms, carrying large volumes of muddy water through nearby communities.

The situation was particularly dangerous for motorists because some roads and bridges became difficult to distinguish from surrounding floodwater.

Tropical Storm Vance: How did it contribute?

The flooding was associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Vance, which had previously weakened and lost its tropical-storm characteristics.

Although the storm had dissipated, its remaining atmospheric moisture continued to contribute to unsettled weather over parts of Mexico.

The incident demonstrates that the danger from a tropical cyclone does not necessarily disappear immediately after the official storm system weakens.

Heavy rainfall and flooding can continue even after a storm has been downgraded or declared dissipated.

Why are flash floods so dangerous?

Flash floods can develop within minutes when intense rainfall occurs over a relatively short period.

Unlike gradual river flooding, flash floods may provide very little time for residents to escape.

Vehicles are particularly vulnerable because even relatively shallow moving water can cause drivers to lose control.

Floodwater may also hide damaged roads, open drainage channels, debris and other dangerous obstacles.

Authorities regularly warn people not to drive or walk through flooded areas, even when the water appears relatively shallow.

What happens next?

Emergency teams are continuing damage assessments and recovery operations in affected communities.

Authorities are also monitoring vulnerable roads, drainage channels and residential areas for further flooding.

The incident has renewed attention on the importance of early weather warnings, effective drainage infrastructure and public awareness about flash-flood risks.

For residents of Sonora and Baja California Sur, the immediate priority remains safety, assistance to affected families and restoration of essential services.

The tragedy in Mexico is another reminder that extreme rainfall can become life-threatening within minutes, particularly when communities are located near rivers, streams and coastal drainage channels.
