Rahul Gandhi leads the INDIA bloc protest at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, demanding accountability over voter-list revision and the CEC's resignation.

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi led a major opposition protest in New Delhi on Sunday, November 1, as INDIA bloc parties gathered at Ramlila Maidan to challenge the revision of electoral rolls and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstration, organised under the slogan “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” (Save the Vote, Save the Nation), brought together opposition leaders, party workers and supporters from several states. The rally followed weeks of protests over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Why did Rahul Gandhi organise the protest?

The INDIA bloc has accused the Election Commission of conducting the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in a manner that could remove eligible voters from electoral rolls.

Opposition leaders allege that large-scale deletions could affect citizens' voting rights and have demanded accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly described the issue as a threat to democratic participation and called on citizens, students, workers and civil society groups to join the movement.

The opposition is also demanding electoral reforms and greater transparency in the voter-list revision process.

Major opposition leaders join the march

Several prominent INDIA bloc leaders participated in the November 1 demonstration, including:

  • Rahul Gandhi – Congress

  • Mallikarjun Kharge – Congress president

  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra – Congress

  • Akhilesh Yadav – Samajwadi Party

  • Mamata Banerjee – Trinamool Congress

  • Tejashwi Yadav – Rashtriya Janata Dal

  • Farooq Abdullah – National Conference

  • Other opposition party representatives

The march proceeded from the Minto Road–Connaught Place area towards Ramlila Maidan, where the main rally was held.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

During the protest, Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of undermining voters' rights and reiterated his demand for accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner.

He also alleged that shops in Connaught Place had been forcibly closed during the rally. The allegation was made by Gandhi and was not independently established in the reports reviewed.

Before the demonstration, he had encouraged rally participants to support Delhi's local traders by shopping at small businesses during the festive season.

Election Commission and BJP's position

The controversy has drawn responses from the ruling BJP and the Election Commission.

The Election Commission maintains that the revision process is intended to identify duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries and improve the accuracy of electoral rolls. It has rejected allegations of political bias and said eligible voters who were wrongly removed can seek re-enrolment.

The BJP has criticised the opposition's campaign, arguing that electoral procedures should not be portrayed as deliberate voter suppression without evidence.

Heavy security arrangements in Delhi

Delhi authorities deployed thousands of police and paramilitary personnel around the protest route and Ramlila Maidan.

Security arrangements included barricades, CCTV surveillance, drones and traffic diversions. Commuters were advised to avoid several roads around central Delhi during the demonstration.

Reuters reported that thousands attended the protest, while other media outlets described a crowd of tens of thousands. Organisers and political parties had announced much higher expected attendance figures, which should not be confused with independently verified turnout.

What happens next?

The INDIA bloc has indicated that it intends to continue raising its concerns over voter-list revisions and take the issue to other constitutional forums.

The dispute over the SIR process is likely to remain a major political and institutional issue as opposition parties seek explanations and the Election Commission defends its procedures.

The central question remains whether the revision process is identifying ineligible entries accurately while ensuring that every eligible Indian citizen retains the right to vote.
