MPA Signs Two Cinema Declarations at Lumière Summit

The Motion Picture Association backed two declarations on cinema's future and anti-piracy at the Lumière Summit, co-chaired by Macron and Lee.

The Motion Picture Association put its name to two international declarations at the Lumière Summit on Monday, aligning itself with governments and private-sector groups from around the world. The first was the Lumière Declaration on the Future of Cinema and the Moving Image; the second addressed strengthened international cooperation against film and audiovisual piracy.

French President Emmanuel Macron and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung co-chaired the summit. MPA chair and chief executive Charles Rivkin took part in two business roundtables held during the event, one with President Lee and one with President Macron. CEOs from the MPA's member studios joined both meetings.

The session with Lee centred on the industry's collaboration with Korea's creative sector. The discussion with Macron looked at where the industry is headed and how to build closer links with France's creative sector.

"Our industry is fueled by a simple proposition: audiences love great stories, well told," Rivkin said. "From the U.S. to France to Korea and beyond, we each have a stake in ensuring that our industry remains a force for openness, a source of investment, and a driver of jobs, growth, and opportunity. This summit proved a vital forum to translate that common ground into greater cooperation."

Emilie Anthonis, who leads the MPA's Europe, Middle East and Africa region as president and managing director, joined a panel on Korea's growing part in the global film and television business, a session that also included President Lee.

Anthonis also spoke in a session called "The Race Against Piracy: A Global Challenge." There she pointed to the efforts of the MPA and the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), described as the leading anti-piracy coalition, in tackling content theft that crosses borders. She said she welcomed the summit's acknowledgement that defending intellectual property and countering piracy are essential to keeping the creative economy healthy.

The MPA's member studios are Netflix, Paramount Pictures, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery.
