PM Modi Warns Cyberattacks Could Threaten India’s Economy; RBI Opens New Security Facilities

Bhubaneswar, October 27, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned that modern conflicts are no longer limited to conventional weapons, highlighting the growing threat posed by cyberattacks against financial institutions and critical infrastructure. His remarks came during the inauguration of new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) facilities in Bhubaneswar focused on data infrastructure and cybersecurity training.

According to reports published on October 25, the facilities include an RBI data centre and a Cybersecurity Training Institute. The project was reported to have a cost of approximately ₹169 crore.

Cybersecurity becomes a national security priority

Cyberattacks can disrupt banking services, compromise customer information, interrupt payments and undermine public confidence in financial institutions. Attacks against interconnected systems can also spread beyond a single organisation, affecting businesses, government services and households.

Modi emphasised the importance of protecting India's banking system from cybercriminals and cyberterrorists. He also highlighted the need for modern infrastructure, stronger computing capabilities and a trained workforce capable of responding to evolving digital threats.

The warning comes as India's economy increasingly depends on digital payments, online banking and connected public services. While these technologies improve convenience and access, they also create a greater need for secure networks, resilient systems and rapid incident response.

Why an RBI data centre matters

A data centre provides the computing, storage and networking infrastructure required to manage digital information and services. For a central bank, secure and resilient infrastructure is important to maintaining operations, protecting sensitive information and supporting the stability of the wider financial system.

A cybersecurity training institute can help develop specialised skills in identifying threats, investigating incidents and strengthening defences. Its impact will depend on the quality of training, collaboration with financial institutions and the ability to translate research into practical protection.

The opening of these facilities does not mean cyber risks have been eliminated. Security requires continuous investment, regular testing, timely software updates and coordination between regulators, banks, technology providers and law-enforcement agencies.

What banks and customers should do

Financial institutions need to maintain incident-response plans, monitor unusual activity, test backup and recovery systems, and train employees to identify phishing and other social-engineering attacks.

Customers can also reduce risks by using strong, unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication where available, never sharing one-time passwords or banking PINs, and verifying payment requests through official channels. Suspicious links and urgent requests for money should be treated cautiously.

A wider digital-security challenge

India's cybersecurity needs extend beyond banking to power networks, telecommunications, transport, healthcare and public administration. Protecting these systems requires skilled personnel, clear accountability and cooperation between public and private organisations.

The RBI's new facilities are part of the broader effort to strengthen financial-sector resilience. Their long-term value will depend on whether they help improve preparedness, develop expertise and reduce the impact of future attacks.
