Power shift: Succession Process Begins in Iran After Khamenei’s Death

Political activity has intensified in Iran following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A key meeting is expected soon to determine the country’s next Supreme Leader. According to reports, two primary options are under consideration. The first option involves selecting one of the three to four names that Khamenei had reportedly identified as potential successors. These names were said to have been finalized discreetly during earlier periods of heightened conflict. Among the frontrunners are the current head of the judiciary, a grandson of Ruhollah Khomeini, and a senior military commander. Notably, Khamenei had excluded his own son from succession discussions, signaling opposition to dynastic leadership and addressing concerns within certain political factions. The second option being discussed is the formation of a temporary four-member council to govern Iran until a permanent Supreme Leader is chosen. Authorities are expected to move swiftly to fill the leadership vacuum to maintain stability and reassure the public during this period of national mourning and political uncertainty.
