Nine Indian states and Delhi seek additional electricity as rising demand and supply constraints put pressure on power availability.

NEW DELHI, October 20: Electricity supply pressures are increasing across several parts of India, with nine states and Delhi reportedly seeking additional power allocations to meet demand, particularly during evening peak hours.

A Business Standard report published on Tuesday, citing Reuters, said Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi had sought additional electricity supplies.

The reported national electricity deficit reached 560 million kilowatt-hours in September 2026, the highest level since August 2023. Reduced hydropower generation following a weaker monsoon, constraints in coal supplies and maintenance at thermal power stations have contributed to tighter availability.

Tamil Nadu has turned to short-term electricity purchases at prices of up to ₹37 per unit during evening peak periods. The state planned to procure approximately 1,500 megawatts of higher-cost power between October 15 and 31, according to the report.

Gujarat has also arranged additional supplies amid elevated demand. The situation highlights the challenge of balancing electricity availability, affordability and reliability as consumption rises.
