India Restricts Fresh Gold Mutual Fund Investments Ahead of Festive Season

India has temporarily restricted fresh investments in several gold-linked mutual fund schemes, as authorities and the financial industry remain watchful of rising precious-metal demand and pressure on the country’s external finances.

From October 16, several asset management companies began restricting new investments in Gold ETF Fund of Funds (FoFs), including fresh lump-sum purchases and new systematic investment plan (SIP) registrations. The restrictions followed reported discussions involving the market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and mutual fund industry representatives. https://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2026/Oct/16/mutual-funds-suspend-fresh-investments-in-gold-silver-fofs-ahead-of-festive-season" title="Source: The New Indian Express"/>.

What Has Changed for Investors?

The restrictions affect specific mutual fund schemes that invest in gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Fund houses including HDFC Mutual Fund, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, Tata Mutual Fund, Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund and UTI Mutual Fund were among those reported to have announced restrictions.

Depending on the scheme, investors may be unable to make fresh lump-sum investments, register new SIPs, increase existing contributions through top-ups or transfer money into the affected funds from other schemes.

However, the measures do not amount to a complete ban on gold investments. Existing SIP instalments may continue under the applicable scheme terms, while redemptions remain available. Direct gold ETFs traded on stock exchanges have also remained open to investors, according to published reports. https://www.business-standard.com/amp/markets/mutual-fund/mutual-funds-halt-fresh-investments-gold-funds-of-funds-126101600333_1.html?isa=yes" title="Source: Business Standard"/>.

Why Has the Investment Route Been Restricted?

India imports a substantial share of the gold consumed domestically. A sharp increase in imports can raise demand for foreign currency and add pressure to the country's trade balance and the rupee.

The latest restrictions come ahead of the festive and wedding seasons, when households traditionally increase purchases of gold jewellery and investment products.

Reports indicate that the restrictions followed regulatory guidance, although individual fund-house notices did not uniformly provide a public explanation for the decision. The precise scope of the restrictions therefore depends on the relevant scheme's official notice.

What Should Existing Investors Know?

Investors who already hold units in affected funds have not been instructed to sell them merely because fresh subscriptions have been restricted. Existing investors should check their fund house's announcement to confirm whether their SIPs will continue and which transactions remain permitted.

Anyone planning a new gold investment should distinguish between a Gold ETF FoF and a direct gold ETF. The former is a mutual fund that invests in an underlying ETF, while the latter is traded on a stock exchange through a demat and trading account.

Investors should compare costs, liquidity, trading prices and personal financial goals before choosing an alternative. The availability of another investment route does not guarantee returns or eliminate market risk.

A Significant Development for India's Gold Market

The restrictions represent a change in how investors can access certain gold-linked mutual fund schemes, rather than a nationwide prohibition on buying gold.

The impact will depend on how investors respond, whether the measures remain in place and how demand for physical gold and exchange-traded products develops during the festive season.
