President Droupadi Murmu inaugurates National SARAS Mela 2026 in Vijayawada, showcasing products by rural women entrepreneurs from across India.

Vijayawada, October 16, 2026: President of India Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the National Saras Mela 2026 in Vijayawada on Friday, with Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and several Union Ministers and public representatives attending the event.

Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, K. Ram Mohan Naidu and Pemmasani Chandrasekhar were among the dignitaries present at the inauguration. The event brought together representatives of women’s self-help groups, including members of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) network, to showcase products, skills and entrepreneurial activities.

President Welcomed at the Mela Venue

The Governor, Chief Minister and Union Ministers welcomed President Murmu upon her arrival at the National Saras Mela premises. The inauguration highlighted the role of rural women in strengthening local economies through self-help groups, small businesses and traditional skills.

During the programme, the President and the Chief Minister posed for a group photograph with women associated with DWCRA and self-help groups from different states. Their participation reflected the event’s focus on bringing rural women entrepreneurs together on a common platform to display their products and exchange experiences.

Platform for Rural Women Entrepreneurs

National Saras Melas are associated with the promotion of products made by women’s self-help groups, including handicrafts, handloom products, textiles, regional specialities and other locally produced goods. Such exhibitions provide participating groups with opportunities to reach customers, explore new markets and improve their business prospects.

For women involved in DWCRA and other self-help group initiatives, these platforms can help expand market access beyond their villages and districts. They also create opportunities to learn about packaging, branding, product presentation and customer engagement.

The participation of women from different states gives visitors an opportunity to discover the diversity of India’s traditional crafts and regional products while supporting community-based enterprises.

Focus on Women’s Economic Empowerment

President Murmu and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu addressed the gathering during the programme. The event placed rural women’s participation in economic activity and the development of self-help group enterprises in the spotlight.

Women’s self-help groups play an important role in rural development by encouraging collective savings, access to credit, livelihood generation and small-scale entrepreneurship. Exhibitions such as the National Saras Mela can help these groups connect with buyers and explore opportunities to increase their income.

The participation of senior state and Union government leaders also underscored the importance of coordination between government institutions and grassroots organisations in supporting rural livelihoods.

The inauguration of National Saras Mela 2026 in Vijayawada marks an important public platform for showcasing women-led enterprises and India’s regional products. The event is expected to draw attention to the contribution of rural women entrepreneurs to local livelihoods and inclusive economic development.
