Delhi Air Quality Improves After Rain as AQI Falls to Moderate Category

By News National Editorial Team

Delhi experienced a noticeable improvement in air quality on Friday, October 30, after rainfall and changing weather conditions helped reduce pollution levels across parts of the national capital.

The city's overall Air Quality Index fell to 121 at around 6 am, placing it in the moderate category, according to a report published on Friday.

The improvement followed an AQI reading of 222 on Thursday, when Delhi's air quality was classified as poor.

The decline offered some relief to residents who had been dealing with elevated pollution levels.

Why did air quality improve?

Rain can help remove certain airborne particles by bringing them down to the ground. Weather conditions such as wind direction, wind speed and atmospheric mixing can also influence how pollutants accumulate.

However, rainfall does not permanently eliminate the sources of air pollution.

Vehicle emissions, industrial activity, construction dust, road dust and other sources can continue to contribute to pollution levels.

The latest improvement should therefore be treated as a change in daily conditions rather than proof that Delhi's pollution problem has been resolved.

Health concerns remain

Even when the overall AQI improves, some local areas may experience higher pollution levels than the citywide average.

Children, older adults and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions should continue to monitor local readings.

Residents should follow public-health advice and seek medical attention if they experience significant breathing difficulties.

Will pollution increase again?

The report warned that pollution could worsen from November 1 as weather conditions change.

Delhi's air quality typically becomes a major public-health concern during the winter months, when emissions and unfavourable atmospheric conditions can combine to trap pollutants near the ground.

The coming days will show whether the improvement after rainfall is sustained.
