Consumers in Karnataka will pay more for Nandini milk from November 1 after the state cabinet approved an increase of ₹8 per litre.

The decision was announced following a cabinet meeting on Thursday. The revised rate is intended to support dairy farmers and help milk unions manage rising operational expenses.

According to the announcement, ₹7 of the increase will go directly to dairy farmers, while ₹1 will be allocated to milk unions to cover expenses such as packaging and transportation.

Why has Karnataka increased milk prices?

The state government has defended the decision by pointing to demands from dairy farmers for higher procurement prices.

Milk producers have faced rising costs associated with cattle feed, animal care, transportation and other agricultural inputs.

The government said the revision would help prevent losses among dairy farmers and cooperatives.

The Karnataka Milk Federation, which markets Nandini dairy products, operates through a network of milk unions and producer cooperatives.

What will consumers pay?

The ₹8 per litre increase will apply to Nandini milk prices from November 1.

Officials said the price of milk would rise from ₹46 to approximately ₹54 per litre for the variety discussed during the cabinet announcement. Different Nandini varieties may have different retail prices depending on fat content and packaging.

Prices of other dairy products, including curd and ghee, may also be revised proportionately, according to the reported announcement.

Consumers should check the updated price printed on product packaging or the official KMF retail information.

Impact on households

Milk is a regular purchase for millions of households. An increase of ₹8 per litre could add to monthly expenses, particularly for families that purchase several litres each day.

Restaurants, tea shops, bakeries and other businesses that depend heavily on milk may also face higher operating costs.

The government maintains that the increase will provide additional support to producers.

The impact will depend on how much of the revised price reaches farmers and how consumers respond to the higher retail rates.
