IMD Issues Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Warnings for Andhra Pradesh

The IMD's October 17 bulletin warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in parts of Andhra Pradesh through October 21.

AMARAVATI, October 17: The India Meteorological Department issued warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds across Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema in its bulletin dated October 17.

The bulletin listed very heavy rain for both subdivisions on October 17, followed by heavy-rain warnings from October 18 through October 21. It also highlighted thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds during the forecast period.

These are subdivision-level forecasts. Conditions may vary considerably between individual districts and locations.

Possible impact on daily life

Heavy rainfall can lead to waterlogging, reduced road visibility, localised flooding and traffic disruption. Lightning and strong winds can also create risks for people working outdoors, travelling on two-wheelers or living in vulnerable structures.

Residents in low-lying areas and near streams, drains and watercourses should monitor local conditions and follow instructions issued by district authorities.

Safety precautions

During thunderstorms, residents should avoid open areas and isolated trees, and seek shelter inside a substantial building or enclosed vehicle. People should not attempt to cross flooded roads or flowing water.

Loose outdoor objects should be secured where strong winds are expected. Farmers and outdoor workers should follow local advisories, particularly during periods of lightning.

Tirupati falls within the broader Rayalaseema region for meteorological reporting. However, a subdivision-level warning does not specify the exact rainfall expected in every town or neighbourhood.

Residents should check the latest district forecast before travelling and follow any official announcements concerning road closures, emergency measures or public services.

Continue monitoring official updates

Weather forecasts can change as conditions develop. The October 17 bulletin provides the forecast available at the time it was issued; it should not be presented as a live forecast on later dates without checking for updates.

For the latest information, residents should consult the IMD and district administration announcements.
