Heavy Rains Trigger Severe Flooding in Turkey on October 18,2026

ISTANBUL | October 20, 2026

News National International Desk Team

Torrential rainfall has triggered severe flooding in Turkey, leaving eight people dead in Istanbul and neighbouring Kocaeli province, according to reports citing local authorities. Rescue teams were continuing their search for a missing person as officials assessed the damage caused by the floods.

The downpour inundated roads, flooded residential areas and damaged homes and commercial establishments. Several parts of Istanbul experienced significant disruption as floodwaters affected transport and daily activities.

Thousands of Properties Reportedly Affected

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül reported approximately 19,300 damage-related applications following the flooding. Initial assessments indicated that around 2,000 homes and 900 businesses had suffered serious damage.

Emergency personnel have been engaged in rescue operations, damage assessments and efforts to assist affected residents. The flooding also created hazardous conditions on roads and in low-lying areas, prompting authorities to advise the public to follow official safety instructions.

Authorities Step Up Relief Efforts

Local authorities have initiated assistance measures for eligible households affected by the disaster. Residents and business owners face the task of clearing debris, repairing damaged property and assessing financial losses.

The authorities are also working to establish the full extent of the destruction while emergency operations continue.

Flooding Highlights Urban Disaster Risks

The incident has renewed concerns about the ability of densely populated cities to cope with intense rainfall. When precipitation exceeds drainage capacity, streets, underpasses and low-lying neighbourhoods can become vulnerable to sudden flooding.

Improved drainage infrastructure, timely weather warnings and public preparedness are important measures for reducing the impact of similar emergencies.
