US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says India and the United States are close to finalising a trade deal as talks continue on tariffs and energy.

NEW DELHI: The United States and India are making progress towards a trade agreement, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying on October 19 that negotiations were close to completion. The development comes as both countries work to strengthen economic ties and address differences over trade barriers and energy supplies.

Rubio’s remarks, reported by Reuters and The Economic Times, indicate progress in negotiations but do not mean that a final agreement has been signed or formally announced. The terms of any deal, including tariff rates and sector-specific concessions, remain subject to confirmation.

Trade and Energy at the Centre of Discussions

Trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington have been affected by disagreements over tariffs, market access and India’s purchases of Russian oil.

US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to waive certain Russia-related sanctions and tariffs has eased some of the pressure on India, according to Reuters. The move could give negotiators additional room to address energy security and trade concerns.

India relies on imported energy to meet a substantial share of its domestic demand. Changes in the cost and availability of crude oil can affect transport expenses, industrial production and inflation. The impact of any policy change will depend on its precise scope and duration.

Jaishankar and Rubio Set for Further Talks

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Rubio are scheduled to hold bilateral talks in Mumbai on October 20, according to an earlier announcement by India’s Ministry of External Affairs reported by Reuters.

The discussions are expected to cover trade, energy, investment, defence and cooperation in critical and emerging technologies. Both governments have an interest in maintaining stable commercial ties while managing differences in their economic and foreign-policy priorities.

What a Trade Agreement Could Mean for India

A completed agreement could provide greater clarity for exporters and businesses operating between the two countries. Depending on its final provisions, it could influence tariffs on Indian goods, access to the US market, investment flows and cooperation in manufacturing and technology.

However, businesses should not assume that tariffs have already changed. The agreement’s actual benefits will depend on the final text, implementation timetable and any exclusions or conditions.

For India, the negotiations form part of a broader effort to expand international trade, attract investment and protect domestic economic interests.
