Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and launched projects worth over ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai Metro and transport infrastructure.

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, October 11, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, focusing on transport infrastructure, energy, scientific research and regional connectivity.

The programme included railway, road and petroleum-sector initiatives, as well as developments associated with Chennai's expanding public transport network. The projects form part of a wider infrastructure programme intended to improve connectivity and support economic activity across the state.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay joined the Prime Minister during parts of the programme. Modi said the central government would work with the state government to support Tamil Nadu's development.

Chennai Metro expansion

One of the major developments was the inauguration of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II. Metro expansion is intended to improve access between residential neighbourhoods, employment centres and transport connections across the city.

Additional rail capacity can help commuters reduce dependence on road transport, although the practical benefits will depend on service frequency, station access, interchange facilities and integration with buses and suburban rail.

The government also highlighted projects involving national highways and railway infrastructure. Improved road and rail connections can support the movement of passengers and goods, but the benefits will depend on timely completion, maintenance and the effective use of the new infrastructure.

Research and education initiatives

The programme also included the dedication of the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the release of the C-STROKE atlas. These initiatives are associated with scientific research and the study of brain-related conditions.

Research infrastructure can support collaboration between scientists, medical professionals and educational institutions. The long-term impact will depend on the centre's research activity, accessibility to collaborators and the translation of findings into practical applications.

What happens next?

Infrastructure announcements of this scale involve several stages, including project construction, commissioning, operational testing and public use. For projects that were inaugurated, the next step is to ensure reliable services and monitor passenger or industry benefits. Projects for which foundations were laid will require continued construction and funding oversight.

For residents, the most direct effects may come through improved transport options, better connectivity and new research facilities. Businesses may also benefit from more efficient logistics and improved links between industrial and commercial centres.

The value of the programme should ultimately be assessed through completed projects, service quality, employment effects and measurable improvements to everyday life.
