Storm Austen brought strong winds and heavy rain to France and Britain, causing widespread power cuts and disruption to trains and flights.

Dateline: Paris, France

Storm Austen brought powerful winds and heavy rain to parts of France and Britain on Friday, disrupting transport and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity, according to reports.

French electricity distributor Enedis reported that nearly 300,000 customers were without power during the disruption. Britain's National Grid also reported outages affecting approximately 12,000 homes.

The storm brought strong gusts, fallen trees and debris that affected roads and rail services. Reports described serious disruption in Brittany and Normandy, with further impacts on commuter rail services and airports.

French authorities issued weather alerts for parts of the country, warning that strong winds and thunderstorms could continue. Transport officials advised travellers to expect delays, cancellations and diversions as crews worked to clear affected routes and restore services.

Storm-related power cuts can affect household heating, communications, businesses and essential services. Residents should follow local authority instructions, avoid fallen power lines and report electrical hazards to the relevant utility provider.

Travellers were advised to check train operators and airlines before starting their journeys. Drivers should avoid flooded roads, take care around fallen trees and follow any road closures imposed by emergency services.

A second weather system, named Boelo in reports, was expected to affect parts of the British Isles over the weekend, according to the UK's Met Office. Forecasts can change, so people should monitor official weather warnings rather than assume conditions will remain the same.

Authorities and utility companies continued responding to outages and transport problems. The number of affected households may change as electricity supplies are restored and updated figures are released.
