Uttarakhand Helicopter Crash Kills Six Near Joshimath; AAIB to Investigate

By News National Editorial Team

A helicopter crash near Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district killed all six people aboard on Friday, October 30, 2026. The aircraft was operated by Trans Bharat Aviation and was travelling from Badrinath towards Dehradun when it crashed in a forested area near Chai village.

The helicopter had one pilot and five passengers on board. The aircraft was identified as an AS350B3 with registration VT-HCX. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, it took off from the Badrinath helipad at approximately 1:14 pm.

The wreckage was located near Chai village in the Joshimath area. Emergency services, police and rescue personnel responded to the accident. The Associated Press subsequently reported that all six people had died and their bodies had been recovered.

Aviation authorities begin investigation

The Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed that a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had been dispatched to Dehradun for a preliminary regulatory assessment.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators will need to examine the helicopter's technical condition, flight records, weather conditions, maintenance history and communications before the accident. The precise cause has not been established in the official information available at the time of publication.

Renewed concerns over helicopter safety

Helicopters are regularly used to transport pilgrims and visitors to high-altitude destinations in Uttarakhand, particularly during the Char Dham pilgrimage season.

The mountainous terrain, rapidly changing weather and limited landing infrastructure make aviation operations in the region particularly challenging.

The accident has renewed questions about flight safety, weather assessments and operational procedures for helicopter services in the Himalayan region.

However, investigators must establish the facts before any conclusion is drawn about whether weather, mechanical problems or operational factors contributed to the crash.

The immediate priority is to support the victims' families and complete the official investigation. Further information is expected from aviation authorities as the inquiry progresses.
