BSNL Plans 50,000–60,000 Additional Mobile Sites to Expand 4G Coverage Across India

NEW DELHI, October 28, 2026: State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning a further expansion of its mobile network, with approximately 50,000–60,000 additional mobile sites proposed to improve coverage and strengthen its 4G services.

The expansion plan follows the company's ongoing nationwide deployment of indigenous 4G technology. The government has been encouraging BSNL to improve network performance, expand connectivity and prepare its infrastructure for a future transition to 5G.

TelecomTalk reported on October 28 that BSNL is planning the additional sites following the deployment of close to one lakh 4G sites across India.

The proposed expansion is a plan and should not be interpreted as confirmation that all additional sites have already been installed or activated.

Existing 4G network forms the foundation

BSNL has been rolling out 4G services using domestically developed telecom technology under the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

According to the Ministry of Communications, BSNL had installed 97,672 indigenous 4G sites as of January 15, 2026, of which 95,511 were operational.

The government also said BSNL had placed an order for one lakh indigenous 4G sites for nationwide deployment.

These figures represent the position reported in January and should not be treated as the latest October installation count.

In a separate announcement in August, the government said BSNL had ordered more than 26,300 additional 4G sites to extend coverage to more towns, villages and remote areas.

What additional towers could mean for customers

A larger network can help improve mobile connectivity in areas where coverage is currently limited or network congestion is common.

Additional sites may help BSNL reach more rural communities, improve indoor coverage in some locations and provide greater capacity where demand is increasing.

The actual benefits will depend on where the sites are installed, their backhaul connectivity, available spectrum, network configuration and the number of users connected to each site.

Customers should therefore not assume that a new tower will automatically deliver a particular internet speed or guarantee uninterrupted coverage.

Preparing for 5G

BSNL's indigenous 4G technology has been described by the government as upgradeable to 5G from a technology perspective.

This could help the company build on its existing network rather than treating every part of the infrastructure as a completely separate deployment.

However, moving to commercial 5G services requires more than installing additional towers. Network software, core infrastructure, spectrum, backhaul capacity, compatible devices and operational testing are also important.

The proposed additional sites are therefore part of a broader network-development strategy, rather than a guarantee of immediate nationwide 5G availability.

BSNL's financial and competitive challenges

BSNL competes with private telecom operators in a market where consumers increasingly expect reliable high-speed data, wide coverage and responsive customer service.

Network investment can help the company attract and retain subscribers, but it also involves substantial spending on equipment, electricity, maintenance, fibre connectivity and other operational requirements.

The company must balance expansion with the need to improve network quality and financial performance.

For subscribers, the most meaningful indicators will be improvements in local signal availability, call reliability, data speeds and service consistency.

What happens next?

The timing and location of the proposed 50,000–60,000 additional sites will be important in determining how quickly customers benefit.

Subscribers should follow official BSNL announcements and local coverage updates to understand when new services become available in their areas.

The expansion reflects India's continuing investment in indigenous telecom infrastructure and the effort to make mobile connectivity more accessible across urban and rural regions.
