Cyclone Arnab Makes Landfall on Andhra Pradesh Coast; Thousands Evacuated

AMARAVATI, October 28, 2026: Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts on Wednesday, bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall to coastal areas and prompting large-scale evacuation and emergency preparedness measures.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone crossed the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh, during the early hours of October 28. The landfall process was completed by approximately 8 a.m. IST.

The weather system crossed the coast with sustained wind speeds of approximately 125–135 kmph and gusts reaching 150 kmph, according to the IMD's sea-area bulletin. The system subsequently weakened from a very severe cyclonic storm to a severe cyclonic storm.

Thousands moved to safer locations

Authorities undertook evacuation operations in vulnerable coastal areas ahead of the storm's arrival. An Associated Press report said at least 89,000 people had been evacuated in Andhra Pradesh, with more than 2,000 shelters opened across 20 districts.

Emergency arrangements included the deployment of medical teams, securing fishing boats and preparing shelters for people living in areas exposed to flooding and strong winds.

The report also said train services had been cancelled and that officials in neighbouring Odisha were preparing additional evacuations in threatened areas.

Heavy rain and wind damage concerns

Although the cyclone weakened after making landfall, the IMD warned that strong winds and heavy rainfall could continue as the system moved inland.

Cyclones can cause flooding, damage to buildings, disruption to power supplies and transport interruptions. Authorities generally advise residents in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from damaged electrical lines and follow official evacuation instructions.

Fishing communities face particular risks during severe weather because rough seas and powerful winds can make coastal waters dangerous even after landfall.

What residents should do

Residents should follow official advisories issued by the IMD, Andhra Pradesh disaster management authorities and local administrations. People in vulnerable locations should remain in designated shelters until authorities confirm that it is safe to return.

Emergency services should be contacted to report dangerous damage, flooding or people requiring urgent assistance.

The full extent of damage and any subsequent changes in the cyclone's intensity should be assessed through official updates as recovery operations continue.
