Global Markets Decline as AI Stocks Slide and Oil Prices Climb

By News National Editorial Team

Global stock markets fell on Thursday as investors reassessed technology company valuations and rising oil prices added to concerns about inflation and borrowing costs.

The S&P 500 declined 0.8%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 142 points, or 0.3%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.3%, according to the Associated Press. Several Asian markets recorded sharper declines earlier in the session.

South Korea's Kospi fell 3.5%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 3% and Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 2.7%, reflecting investor caution over technology stocks and global economic uncertainty.

Shares of several major technology companies weakened. Lam Research reportedly fell 10.1% after issuing a weaker-than-expected outlook, while Meta and Tesla also recorded losses.

Oil prices added to market concerns, with benchmark crude rising amid renewed geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the wider Middle East. Higher energy prices can increase transport and production costs and complicate efforts by central banks to control inflation.

Investors also moved towards safer assets, including US Treasury bonds, as markets reacted to the combination of technology-sector uncertainty, higher oil prices and geopolitical risks.

Market movements remain sensitive to company earnings, central-bank policy signals and developments in international conflicts.
