A new UN climate report warns global warming could reach 2.8°C by 2100 if countries continue with current climate policies.

Global warming could reach approximately 2.8°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100 if current climate policies continue, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warned in a report released on October 21, 2026.

The report, Emissions Gap Report 2026: The Point of Return, says existing national climate commitments are insufficient to meet the temperature goals established under the Paris Agreement.

Even if countries fully implement their current climate pledges and maintain similar efforts, global warming could reach approximately 2.6°C, according to the assessment.

UNEP says global greenhouse gas emissions need to fall by 18% from 2025 levels by 2030 and by 45% by 2035 to follow a pathway involving a limited overshoot of the 1.5°C target and a return to that level by 2100.

The report calls for faster emissions reductions, greater deployment of renewable energy and stronger climate policies. It also highlights the need for international cooperation to accelerate the transition to lower-emission energy systems.
