Google Trends Adds Category Filters to Explore Page

Google Trends now lets users filter the Explore page by pre-defined categories without typing a query, helping refine and narrow search trend data.

Google has added category filters to Google Trends, allowing users to sort the Explore page by pre-defined categories without first entering a search query. Google announced the change on LinkedIn.

The update means people can now browse trend data for a specific category on its own. Previously, seeing data on the Explore page required typing in a query. With the new filters, a category can serve as the starting point instead.

The categories also work alongside a search term. Users can apply a category to a query to keep the results confined to that topic. Google said this helps ensure a query stays within a chosen category and does not overlap with other categories of searches.

That overlap control is one of the more practical uses of the feature. When a search term could sit across several subjects, the category filter narrows the data down and strips out results that belong to unrelated areas.

The filters can also help with idea generation. Anyone hunting for fresh topics to cover within a particular category can use the tool to surface what is trending in that space.

The feature is live now on the Google Trends Explore page.
