India's October 2026 GST collections rise 22.9% to ₹2.31 lakh crore, supported by strong domestic and import-related tax revenue.

India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections recorded strong growth in October 2026, reaching approximately ₹2.31 lakh crore, according to provisional government data released on November 1.

The gross GST revenue increased by 22.9% compared with the corresponding month last year, indicating a significant rise in tax collections.

The latest figures offer an important snapshot of India's economic activity, consumption patterns and international trade.

October's performance also marks the fourth consecutive month in which gross GST collections remained above ₹2 lakh crore.

October GST collection: Key figures

India recorded gross GST revenue of approximately ₹2.31 lakh crore in October 2026, compared with around ₹1.88 lakh crore in October 2025.

After adjusting for refunds, net GST collections increased by 25.6% to approximately ₹2.03 lakh crore.

The growth was supported by both domestic economic activity and a significant increase in revenue from imported goods.

Domestic GST revenue rose by 15.8% year-on-year to approximately ₹1.59 lakh crore.

Meanwhile, import-related GST revenue recorded stronger growth of 42.2%, reaching approximately ₹72,246 crore.

The sharp increase in import-related collections was one of the major factors behind the overall improvement.

Why did GST collections increase?

GST collections are influenced by several factors, including consumer spending, business transactions, imports, compliance and the reporting of taxable economic activity.

The October figures indicate that revenue from imports contributed significantly to the overall increase.

Higher import-related collections may reflect changes in import values, transaction volumes and the composition of goods entering India.

Domestic GST growth also remained positive, suggesting continued activity across sectors involved in the supply of goods and services.

However, one month's tax collection figures alone cannot establish the overall strength of the economy. A complete assessment requires examining industrial production, employment, inflation, household consumption and private investment.

India's seven-month GST performance

The government's provisional figures also showed that gross GST collections during April–October 2026 reached approximately ₹14.77 lakh crore.

This represented growth of 13.2% compared with approximately ₹13.05 lakh crore during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Net GST revenue for the same seven-month period increased by 12.6% to approximately ₹12.69 lakh crore.

These figures indicate that the government's indirect tax revenue has maintained a positive growth trajectory during the first seven months of FY2026–27.

What does this mean for businesses and consumers?

GST collections are an important indicator of government revenue and formal economic transactions.

For businesses, stronger collections can reflect increased taxable sales, imports and improved reporting compliance.

For the government, higher revenue provides additional fiscal resources that can support public expenditure, infrastructure development and welfare programmes.

However, rising GST revenue does not automatically mean that every household or business is experiencing improved financial conditions.

Consumers may still face pressure from food prices, fuel costs, housing expenses and other household expenditure.

Small businesses may also experience different economic conditions depending on their industry and operating costs.

The coming months will provide a clearer picture of whether the strong October performance continues.

Economists and businesses will closely monitor domestic GST revenue, import-related collections, refunds and broader economic indicators.

October's figures represent an encouraging revenue performance, but sustained growth will be more meaningful than a single month's increase.
