EPFO Launches WhatsApp Services: Employees Can Check PF Balance and Passbook Information Through Mobile Phones

By News National Editorial Team

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced WhatsApp-based services to make provident fund information more accessible to subscribers across India.

The announcement was made by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on November 1, 2026, during the organisation's 74th Foundation Day celebrations in New Delhi.

The initiative is part of EPFO's wider effort to improve digital service delivery and reduce the need for employees and pensioners to visit physical offices for routine enquiries.

Under the new facility, eligible subscribers will be able to access important provident fund information through EPFO's verified WhatsApp service.

What services will EPFO provide through WhatsApp?

According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment's official announcement, subscribers will be able to access several important account-related details.

The announced services include:

  • Checking their Provident Fund (PF) balance.

  • Viewing their latest five PF transactions.

  • Accessing passbook information.

  • Receiving personalised guidance.

  • Getting assistance with requirements related to the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY).

The initiative is intended to make routine EPFO services easier to access through a familiar mobile messaging platform.

Previously, subscribers often relied on EPFO portals, mobile applications or physical visits to obtain certain account-related information.

WhatsApp-based access is expected to provide an additional digital channel for these services.

Automatic settlement for eligible inactive PF accounts

Another important announcement made during the Foundation Day event concerns the settlement of eligible inoperative EPF accounts.

EPFO announced that eligible Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000 will be considered for automatic settlement.

Under the announced mechanism, subscribers will not need to submit individual claims for these eligible accounts.

The organisation will initiate settlement after completing prescribed identity and bank-account verification procedures.

EPFO estimates that approximately one lakh accounts involving a combined amount of around ₹5 crore are expected to benefit from the initiative.

This measure could help former employees and other eligible account holders recover small outstanding provident fund balances that have remained unclaimed.

The verification process is important to ensure that money reaches the rightful beneficiaries.

Why is this important for employees?

Provident fund savings represent an important part of retirement-related financial security for millions of salaried workers.

Employees who change jobs, move between locations or stop working in formal employment may sometimes face difficulties tracking older PF accounts.

Digital services can reduce the time required to access basic account information and help subscribers remain aware of their savings.

The automatic settlement initiative also addresses a practical problem involving small inactive balances that may otherwise remain unclaimed for extended periods.

Important precautions for EPFO subscribers

Subscribers should use only officially verified EPFO communication channels.

People should never share their UAN password, OTP, ATM PIN, bank password or other confidential financial information with unknown individuals claiming to provide PF assistance.

Fraudsters sometimes use fake WhatsApp accounts and messages to impersonate government departments.

Before responding to any message, subscribers should verify that the communication channel is officially authorised by EPFO.

They should also avoid clicking suspicious links or installing unknown applications.

The introduction of WhatsApp-based services represents another step towards expanding digital access to India's social security system.

The actual convenience for subscribers will depend on service availability, verification procedures and the successful implementation of the announced facilities.

Employees should follow official EPFO updates for the verified WhatsApp contact details and instructions on using the services.
