US–Iran diplomatic talks continue in Doha with Qatar mediating, while military escalation and Strait of Hormuz tensions remain major concerns.

Diplomatic efforts to prevent another escalation in the conflict involving the United States and Iran continued on October 31 and November 1, 2026, as Iranian negotiators held discussions with Qatari mediators in Doha.

The talks come amid growing international concern about the possibility of renewed military action in the Gulf region. Although diplomatic channels remain open, major disagreements between Washington and Tehran continue to complicate efforts to reach an agreement.

According to a Reuters report published on November 1, Iranian representatives met Qatari officials to discuss possible ways to move towards ending the conflict.

The discussions are particularly important because the situation has implications beyond the two countries, including regional security, international shipping and global energy markets.

Qatar attempts to bridge differences

Qatar has emerged as an important intermediary in diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations cited by Reuters, Qatari representatives have been communicating proposals intended to build confidence between the two sides before broader peace discussions.

One proposal reportedly involved a seven-day process under which Washington and Tehran would take gradual steps to reduce tensions.

However, the proposal has faced difficulties. Tehran reportedly did not consider the Qatari proposal satisfactory and has continued promoting its own conditions for resolving the conflict.

The discussions demonstrate that diplomatic engagement is continuing despite the absence of an agreed settlement.

US keeps military options open

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump had not made a final decision about launching further military strikes against Iran.

Rubio indicated that Washington would prefer a diplomatic resolution but maintained that the United States retained the military capability to act if necessary.

The comments highlight the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations.

Washington's position is that any agreement must address its security concerns, particularly those connected with Iran's nuclear programme and regional activities.

Tehran, meanwhile, has repeatedly insisted that its national interests and security demands must be addressed.

Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern

One of the most important issues in the negotiations is the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically significant waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

The route is essential to international energy transportation, with a substantial share of global oil trade passing through it.

Disruption to shipping in the strait could affect oil prices, shipping costs and energy supplies across several countries.

Iran has linked its proposals to the reopening of the waterway and the removal of restrictions affecting its ports.

The United States has also maintained pressure through measures targeting Iranian maritime activity.

What does this mean for India?

India has significant economic and strategic interests in stability across the Gulf region.

The region is important for India's crude oil and natural gas supplies, international trade and the safety of Indian nationals working in Gulf countries.

Any prolonged military escalation could increase energy costs, create shipping disruptions and affect India's import bill.

Higher global oil prices could also place additional pressure on transportation, manufacturing and household expenses.

Indian policymakers and energy companies will therefore be closely monitoring developments.

Can diplomacy prevent another escalation?

The Doha discussions represent an important diplomatic effort, but a final agreement remains uncertain.

The two sides continue to hold different positions on security guarantees, maritime restrictions, economic measures and the future of Iran's nuclear programme.

For now, diplomatic engagement and military preparations appear to be proceeding simultaneously.

The coming days could prove significant in determining whether negotiations gain momentum or tensions increase again.
